Happy National Hummingbird Day!

I have always enjoyed hummingbirds. From the time I was young, my mother had a hummingbird feeder right outside the kitchen window. All summer long you could see them all day coming to feed. Of course there is always the bully bird that tries to chase away all the other hummingbirds from the feeder. It was always a futile effort, because while it would chase one away another three would sneak in to feed!

Today happens to be National Hummingbird Day, a day that I did not know even existed. That was until it popped up online, I learned something new so the day was not wasted! Hummingbirds are amazingly beautiful creatures and some of the most interesting birds on the planet.

Because it is Hummingbird Day I decided it would be fun to share a hummingbird coin. I own a couple which I've shared in the past, but I've been eyeing this coin to buy for some time. It comes from Dominica, a small island nation in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean. It's beautiful island, I've only been there once but remember it well. There is some beautiful areas to go scuba diving! Here's the coin I mentioned:

From APMEX.com

About the coin:

numista.com

This was produced by the Scottsdale Mint for the nation of Dominica. The private mint produces some of the finest silver products on the planet. I love animal coins which is why I like it, but would prefer the national coat of arms to the former Queen. But Dominica is a common wealth of the UK, although run independently.

Today this coin runs about $47.76 as of the time of writing of this post, and silver is just about $41 per Troy ounce. So a premium of around $6.50, a little high for me. I may look our for a sale before I pick one up. It's a cool coin at any rate!

Hummingbirds are native to the Americas and found from Alaska all the way down to Argentina's Tierra Del Fuego (Land of Fire.) There are 375 species of which the smallest beats it's wings 99 times per second. Talk about fast! They mostly survive off of nectar but eat small insects as well. And usually they are very colorful just like the one from the Lesser Antilles on today's coin called the Purple-throated Carib Hummingbird.

Purple-throated Carib Hummingbird

oneearth.org

This species of hummingbird lives only in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. Unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen one in person, but when I was in the area I wasn't there to bird watch. I was mostly diving on my trip. These are larger hummingbirds at 11-12 cm (4.5 inches) in length. They are also very pretty!

The tend to sedentary birds compared to other species and live at higher elevations in the forests. Many of the islands in the area are volcanic in origin and have some high mountains and the interiors that are usually covered in rain forest. They are beautiful places if you ever have the chance to visit! Dominica is special in that it's mostly rainforest and high peaks, but you won't find all that many nice beaches. It's a beautiful place if you ever have the chance to visit! You might even see one of these beautiful hummingbirds!

Here's an aerial view of Dominica, it's a gorgeous island!

Awesome, hummingbird silver coin my friend!🤗👍
We had several types of hummingbirds in Colorado, the aggressive one was called “Rufus”, it always chased away the other hummingbirds!🙄
I discovered that in the Pacific Northwest, we have one species that will over winter here. Even on snowy days you can see these little guys under your eaves or covered porches!😊

They really are funny little creatures, and very gutsy. They have no problem buzzing right by your head to intimidate you! That's cool that you have some even over winter. Maybe you should put out a feeder with the recommended vitamin sugar solution they recommend these days. Apparently sugar alone isn't good for them!

Very true I have read that as well! Many people don’t realize that sugar water really isn’t enough nutrition for these little guys!😮

My parents have a couple feeders and get a ton of hummingbirds at their house. They are fascinating little buggers!

They are fun to watch aren't they? I remember trying to refill the feeder that the bully would try to chase me away from the feeder as well. They really think they are tougher than they really are!

I still see the odd Hummingbird around my neighborhood, I just don't remember the variety. I see them almost every year. One could almost mistaken them for wasps or large insect. The more flowers I have, the more often they would show up.

They are fun to watch! The ones there are migratory and may fly to Mexico for the winter. Can you imagine being that small and flying that far? Flowers are much healthier for them to feed on the human feeders that get put out, so lots of flowers is a great way to see them. It's really amazing what they can do for being so small!

They are unique birds and so much fun to watch. They flap their wings anywhere form 12-99 times per second, that's amazing isn't it?

I have never seen a hummingbird live in the wild.
You know I swear yesterday I saw it was a national wading bird day, perhaps it was earlier in the week, days fly by now!

I did see that yesterday was also ...
National Read a Book Day: This day encourages everyone to put aside their devices and spend some time reading a book.

National Coffee Ice Cream Day: A day for all lovers of this specific flavor to celebrate by indulging in a scoop or two.

National Tailgating Day: Observed on the first Saturday of September, it's a day to celebrate the tradition of tailgating before sporting events.

I remember on tsu years ago I used to make a daily visual about what the national day was!

It's a beautiful coin though
