Goonies Silver Spanish Doubloon to Find One-Eye Willy's Pirate Treasure

Happy Labor Day to everyone in the US and Canada! It also happens to be the first of the month and Hive Power Up Day. This month I did the minimum as I am investing in a few other areas as well at the moment. But any power up is a good one in my book!

Now onto the interesting part of today's post!

About a month ago I shared a coin inspired by the movie The Goonies. It was a film released in 1985 from a story written by Steven Spielberg. It starred several well known actors when they were still just kids and far from famous including Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, and Corey Feldman. It even had a future James Bond villain Robert Davi as one of the bad guys! It's a classic film that really embodies the 1980's and worth watching if you somehow missed it.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the films release and there has been no shortage of collectible items produced. Two of the coolest I've seen so far were produced in the form of solid silver from the island nation on Niue. This is a replica of the Spanish doubloon used as a prop in the movie to hunt down the pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willy and is an actual new coin!

Only 500 of these are going to be made and will sell quickly in all likelihood. It is one Troy ounce of pure silver to boot! The asking price is pretty steep as for as the premium goes at $169.99, but may be one that could be flipped in a couple years for a nice profit. Or maybe not... I think it's awesome but my budget for precious metals this next two months is going to be very, very small. Real life bills keep piling up...

Here is another replica I found on etsy.com. There are several manufacturers that produce replicas of props from classic movies. I wonder where the original ended up? The director probably kept it! But in reality these look nothing like a real Spanish piece of 8 or gold escudo...

Spanish Gold Escudos and Silver 8 Reales

After the Spanish conquistadors had conquered much of Central and South America they began plundering it's silver and gold. In order to transport them more easily back to Spain, they were minted into coins. Two of the most well known from the age of the pirates was the gold escudo and silver 8 reales or piece of 8.

Many of these coins were lost in shipwrecks over the years and are littered across the seafloor of the Caribbean. One such wreck that has produced some of the finest coins and treasures is the Nuestra Señora de Atocha. It sank on a reef in the Florida Keys in 1622 during a hurricane dumping $250-500 million of loot on the bottom of the sea. Some has been recovered by Mel Fisher and company including these beautiful coins.

Those coins will cost you a very pretty penny, way outside of my budget anytime soon. Some of these coins can be found along the beaches of Florida's treasure coast. They came from a different fleet wreck but if you are lucky enough you could find one just walking down the beach. Although your odds would be better with a metal detector after a big hurricane blows through!
