Everybody Loves a Clown...

If you've ever seen It by Stephen King you might not be a big fan of clowns. Pennywise was a spooky character! I know many people who were traumatized by clown experiences as children and are terrified of anyone dressed as one. Personally, they have never bothered me. Then again I don't think I had any experiences with them in my childhood.

Why the clown talk you might ask? It brings me right to the subject matter of the day, a nice silver strike token from the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino that was formerly in Las Vegas, Nevada. Silver strike tokens are collectibles made of silver that could be won by playing the Silver Strike Slot Machines in casinos around the world. Sadly, very few of these still exist and are becoming fixtures of days long past in gaming.

I prefer to collect these tokens from casinos that are long since defunct. That makes them part of gaming history and tends to make them more valuable as the years pass us by. Today's token features Jocko the Clown who was the mascot of the former Boardwalk Hotel and Casino.

About the token:

From silverstrikers.com

These tokens aren't real common and are becoming more and more expensive. It contains 0.6 Troy ounces of pure silver surrounded by a brass ring. However, there is a variant that was made with a copper rim that is slightly more valuable. These usually sell for more than $60 on eBay as of late, often much more depending on condition. It is fun to hold a piece of Las Vegas history in your hands, and the best part is it's silver!

Boardwalk Hotel and Casino

casino.fandom.com

The Boardwalk Hotel and Casino started life as a humble Holiday Inn back in 1966. Eventually a casino was added as it was located in Las Vegas. It was rebranded The Boardwalk in 1989 and received a complete facade remodel in 1995 to resemble Coney Island amusement park in New York City. It even had a fake roller coaster, parachute drop, and Ferris wheel. As it was built on only 8 acres of land there wasn't room to create an actual small them park.

One of the most notable features about the casino was the giant Jocko the Clown face that stood above the entrance of the casino. If you hated clowns, this was not the casino for you! I never stayed at the hotel but I seem to recall having driven by it back when the big clown was there. It has been a few years...

The hotel had a seafood all you can eat buffet which was supposed to be really good. One of the things I always love about Vegas are the buffets! They are always high quality and have very fresh seafood. You can eat king crab and Maine lobster to your hearts delight. Of course all of the butter you consume with it might not be so good for your heart, but you have to enjoy life sometimes!

In 1997 Mirage Resorts purchase the hotel/casino with no plans to replace it. However, Mirage was then acquired by MGM Grand in 2000 which spelled doom for the Boardwalk. In 2006 it was closed down permanently and demolished. If you hate clowns you may like the picture below.

Today the Waldorf Astoria stands on the site of the former Boardwalk. Yet another testament to the ever changing skyline of Sin City.

That will wrap things up for me today. I do hope you enjoyed the silver even if you hate clowns! I like the old vintage pieces of casinos of days past, the best part being you know that no more will ever be made. Amazing how Las Vegas changes over the years!☺️
I don’t have a problem with clowns, but I can see from your photo how some people could……
It does look a little bit intimidating at the entrance !😳
Sounds like these silver strike tokens are becoming quite collectible, especially with silver being up in price!👍😊

I remember that on my last trip to LV, about a year ago, we pigged out on those, !LOL
Yes, those SiverStrikers are getting to be expensive, especially if they are from casinos that are long since defunct.

Thanks to clowns like Pennywise, Captain Spaulding, The Joker, Stitches, Art the clown, etc. the clown union has mutated into creepy dark characters in today's pop culture. I have one creepy clown from Scottsdale's 2025 Halloween series.

I still get terrified as an adult watching clown figures and characters even though I know they're just movies. The laughs and the scary masks still gets to me lol.

Not scared of clowns. Just never got into them. Never thought they were funny or scary as a kid. Still don't. Not sure why.
