A Very Old And Beautiful Silver Coin From Guatemala

Thursday can be a tough day for me creatively. Maybe I'm just tired from the long week, or maybe I'm just going senile. Either way... I almost didn't create a post today , fortunately, I suddenly found myself having about an hour of absolute free time. I considered taking a nap, but convinced myself to do some creative writing instead.

Today I want to share a coin that I picked up many long years ago, but I don't actually recall where I bought it. It comes from Guatemala, a beautiful country in Central America. What made me think of this coin was a post I saw a few days back by a new member here on Hive @stunningstephie , who happens to live there. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a rather old coin and to be completely honest, it's not in great shape. Then again it was minted in 1862, so not too bad for being 163 years old! I'm a sucker for old coins... I really like the design on the reverse (back) of the coin. Have a look:

About the coin:

From numista.com

This coin contains 90.3% silver which is a bit odd. I'm not sure why they didn't just leave it at 90%, but I imagine they had a good reason for it. Guatemala has their own mint that was established by the Spanish government in 1733. The coin weighs 6.16 grams, so it's total silver value is just about $6.86. As far as numismatic value it's probably not very expensive as it is extremely worn, I'd guess around $10 on a good day.

It commemorates the first president of Guatemala, Rafael Carrera. He also happened to be the fourth president as well. He was exiled after his first term but then returned to power again several years later. It's an interesting read over on Wikipedia, and he's a very important figure in the history of Guatemala. I included the webpage link in my references section below if you're interested.

I have always liked this coin, which is why it's still in my stack. I've always meant to look for one in better condition, but never got around to it. There are always more treasures I wish I could buy than I can ever possibly afford...

That will wrap up my post for this Thursday, I hope you enjoyed the coin. And please make sure to support @stunningstephie as she starts her journey here on Hive. Please feel free to ask any questions or comments below, and thank you for all of your support. It really is greatly appreciated. Have a great day everyone!

Thank you! I love old coins, and I really am kind of a sucker for them. I even like the wear on it as it makes you wonder who had held that coin in their pocket or purse over many, many years. If it could only talk!

Guatemala has an extensive history and was part of the Mayan empire building pyramids throughout the jungles. Most today are overgrown, but they are discovering new pyramids and ancient cities almost every year. The Americas have been populated by humans for more than 10,000 years and probably much more. Most of the recorded history came after the Spanish arrived and tired to destroy all of their old culture and convert them to Catholicism.

It is a very pretty place, lots of green jungles much like where you live!

It's an older one which is part of why I bought it. It is a beautiful place and I've been there a couple times, but that was years ago... Glad you like the coin!

It is an old coin, and so cool, @thebighigg !
Yes, so when you remember, and if you find a better one that's affordable, replace that one since you like the coin so much!
What is your oldest coin?

Thank you @silversaver888 ! I don't think I would replace it, it would in addition to the old as well! lol

American oldest is 1799, oldest is probably a Roman coin from around 30 BC if I recall correctly. How about you?

Gorgeous coins! That Half Eagle and Victoria Jubilee are awesome. Roman coins are always fun to collect, but finding ones that are good quality is difficult. I started only buying graded coins when I don't know enough about them to be a smart shopper.

I guess we are both on the same page..... I almost missed your post tonight Lol! 🙄
163 years old... From the wear and tear this has been in the pockets of many people throughout the years!
I think that makes it a bit more valuable!!😇👍😀

It would be amazing to hear the stories the coin would have to tell! I posted very late, and didn't even get started until fairly late in the afternoon. I figured it made more sense to create a post than to take a nap! lol

I'm racking my mind on this 90.3%, I could only speculate Guatemala have adjoining countries trust issues with Guatemalan money in it's recent past. Consider it as a trade premium? Similar to American Trade Dollars having 429 grains of silver versus other Trade dollars having only 416 grains, to encourage China to accept American silver as payment.

That might be it, not long after El Salvador started accepting Guatemalan currency. Maybe it was the silver content that helped them decide? This was before the US came up with the idea for the trade dollar, but it may have been the same concept. I hadn't thought of that!

Cool coin and I must admit I would be drawn to the design as to whether I liked a coin or not.

The design is always important for me too. I really like the design on the reverse on this one, which is why I bought it!
