A Solid Gold Wonka Bar to Kick Off Three Tune Tuesday

Every now and again I run across something online that I find incredibly cool. This is one of those! It is a Wonka Bar made of pure gold, a tiny replica of one you could see in the original movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory from 1971. Have a look at this beauty:

APMEX.com

It's produced by PAMP out of Switzerland, one of the premier precious metals producers in the world. These are one gram of pure gold, and only five thousand will be produced. That will make these fairly collectible themselves. However, there is a huge downfall... These are priced at $343 which is very expensive for a gram of gold. The current metal value of one gram is around $168, so this has one huge premium, far more than I would ever be willing to pay! As cool as it is, way over priced!

It is a great way to lead into a Three Tune Tuesday though...

film-authority.com

This classic film starred Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. It's a true cinematic gem that really couldn't have been done by any other actor of the day. It's a movie I remember loving as a kid and I always assumed it had been a hit since it was first released. I found out later nothing could have been further from the truth!

The film was released on June 30, 1971 and was produced on a budget of $3,000,000. At the time it didn't fare well with most critics and only generated $4,000,000 at the box office. It was considered a massive failure by Paramount Pictures and after it's initial run in theaters it vanished into cinema obscurity. When their distribution contract expired in 1977 they decided not to renew. The film was subsequently sold to Warner Brothers for $500,000.

In the 1980's the film became a hit as it was replayed on television broadcasts. Before long it had become and in demand film and achieved cult classic status. It turns out Warner Brothers got a deal because since that time they have made a fortune off the film. Original props from the film go for insane prices as well, just take a look at this Wonka Bar:

propgallery.com

One of the original prop Wonka Bars from the film is currently on sale for 35,000 British pounds (~$47,000.) Much more expensive than the gold one, but it is one of very few that still exist today. Collectible props from cult classic films can be worth a fortune!

Now for some music! But first off I want to say thank you to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event where you can share three songs that you enjoy. One lucky participant will win some HSBI units, you can't have too many of those! So if you don't already participate feel free to jump in, just use the tag #ttt or #threetunetuesday and it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @ablaze .

I decided it might be fun to share some songs from the film, definitely something very different from my usual style!

This first song from the film is probably one of the most memorable to anyone who's seen it. This one is called "Pure Imagination":

I always loved the Oompa Loompa's in the movie, they were a lot of fun. Here's the first "Ooompa Loompa" song:

And who could forget the classic from the character Veruca Salt. Not the band, the character from the movie. This is called "I Want It Now":

That will do it for this Three Tune Tuesday, and I hope you enjoyed the gold Wonka Bar as well. I wish I could afford that prop from the film, what a cool piece of movie history. I don't have that kind of cash laying around though! I hope you're all having a great week so far, and I appreciate all of your support. Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below!

I actually didn't see this movie until I was much older. Like as an adult I think. I don't actually remember very well. That is a cool piece, but like you said, definitely not worth the premium unless you are an uber fan of the film or something.

I'm surprised you missed that one as a kid, but it may not have been as popular in that part of the country. Way overprice on the gold though, and $47K for the original prop is insane money. It would be a cool piece of Hollywood history to own but way outside my budget! lol

I'd rather own something from Die Hard or something like that!

Thanks! It may be too expensive for me to buy right now, but it is pretty. That old prop is in the UK for sale, also way outside my budget! lol

Good for you, @thebighigg.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen a single Wonka movie! I'll check it out on YouTube.

Wow, seriously, that's a high price! Only someone who really wants to collect them would pay it. But it's very pretty, and I loved the movie.

I remember laughing at the oompa loompas. Especially when they sung their song. Thanks for sharing a little memory @thebighigg.

What a delightful post. A mixture of nostalgia and... Gold stacking? Even now I recall the oompa loompa song and Charlie and his grandpa's excitement over the gold wrapper. Theres a capitalist analogy right there - work hard, be a good person, and you might get a slice of the pie.

That story and film sure wormed it's way in - even on the weekend, my daughter in law called my 3 yo grandson Violet Beauregard for hogging his way through a big bowl of purple grapes. He's too young to get it of course, but the reference didn't escape any of the adults.

When movies are failures I wonder why; is it because people simply didn't like them, or they cost a certain amount to produce and the owners didn't make enormous profit from them, or simply from their ratings in the box office?

I think that's actually a beautiful piece of gold though. Looks clean as well.
