A Year Of Compulsory Service
A mandatory service is one that is compulsory and in my country Nigeria 🇳🇬, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is one that is mandatory for every fresh graduate from the universities . This service is usually stipulated for one (1) year because its a scheme that is established to qualify every Nigeria 🇳🇬 youth for employment especially in the government sectors and big private organizations once the person has gone through this mandatory service.
Serving the country for one (1) year makes you a patriotic citizen and after this one year, a certificate is issued to the person showing completion which also enables you have the right to apply for jobs in government establishments or private organizations as a graduate 👨🎓. Its very important to note that this mandatory service is what many companies looks out for when it comes to employment or offering one a job.
Mandatory service however starts with the first three (3) weeks of training which usually is in a camping and all Corps are to receive a hectic military training . And after this three (3) weeks, every one is posted to various locations of their primary assignment. Some can be within the state of your university while others can be a state you never visited before. This mandatory service gives every Corp the opportunity to meet people of different cultures and languages since members due not have the right to choose where to be posted to.
This service has created lots of opportunities for rural areas and some communities because some NYSC - members can be posted to secondary schools, some health centers and others go to local government services or primary schools. But the issue here is that some Corps find it very difficult to cope with their postings due to financial problems, because posting sometimes results to far distances which also brings hindrances to the NYSC .
Although this service has helped for the call to civil responsibilities, youth empowerment and patriotism which Nigerian graduates 🎓 has contributed to through encouragement, many go through hardships while serving since the allowance paid to the Corps are not reasonable so those who do not have assistance from parents or family members go through stressful service and struggle. This is why some NYSC during posting lieu and ask for a state that will favor them.
However, NYSC mandatory service has helped so many youth connect with each other while serving since may can be posted in one local government , rural area , where they have the opportunity to connect and work in harmony to achieve their objectives.
Benefits Over Scrapping:
NYSC benefits , purpose and achievements are immeasurable and should be considered never to be scrapped out because the services rendered by this set of youths has helped so many pupils, students, and even others in the area of posting and services. This scheme has also helped the Nigerian government so much through developments from every contribution the NYSC puts in. And as it also enables employment opportunities after services, many will be employed through this scheme.
In conclusion, the government should be more concerned on safety of the NYSC postings and allowances they receive. Safety of this youths are important as mss as many has lost their lives through unhealthy environment and lack of medical care allowances. There is need for improvement as it will help bring lots of encouragement to this scheme.
