What will be, will be or not.

There’s a story of two brothers who were said to have a fortune teller who told them what they would be in the future. The younger brother was said to have the glory of a king, and he would be served by his elder brother.

On hearing this, the elder brother ran away from home at a very young age, determined to change his destiny. He wasn’t going to be a slave to his brother nor to anyone at that. So, he left without hesitation. Despite the plea from his parents not to leave, he listened to no one. The parents also heard of the brother’s fortune and raised him like a “king”.

The supposed king-to-be would be allowed to do nothing by himself because he was being prepared to become the next king. The major life survival skills were oblivious to him because there was no reason to learn them.

Unfortunately, his parents passed in an accident, and he was left to fend for himself, however, before their passing, they had preached the gospel of him becoming king to their kins, so they all started serving him waiting for the king to die and he would take over.

Soon, the people got tired because they got nothing in return for all their favours. They stopped all their giftings and cares and he was made to fend for himself. He lost the people around him because they were all tired of serving “a useless would-be-king”. Eventually, he died of hunger without smelling the mantle of kingship.

The brother, on the other hand, travelled far from home to change the story of his life. Even though he suffered, his life got better bit by bit because every day, he did something towards changing his story. He didn’t leave his life to chances. He knew what he wanted and went straight for it. He was destined to be successful, which he eventually did.

Recently, I’ve been thinking about a lot of phrases that don’t make sense to me and “what will be, will be” is one of them. I understand that people use this phrase to console themselves when things do not go their way or happen exactly the way they planned, however, I think it is very wrong to leave your life to chances.

Imagine saying what will be will be and because of that, you are not applying for jobs, hoping that the job will locate you at home.

I was talking to a guy who strongly believes in that phrase using one of his friends as an example. His friend has been out of job for two years, but he suddenly got referred by someone and he got a job without an interview.

I asked my friend if he knew the many companies he had applied to before he decided to rest. I asked if he knew how many networking events he had attended and how open-mouthed he was to make sure he got the job. I asked if he knew anything about putting himself out on social media to which he answered NO.

See, I learnt that what will be will be if you make efforts in making sure the good happens, however, if you sleep, or lock yourself up or out of the world, what is supposed to be will NOT be because you’ve chosen to leave your life to chances, and gambling is only a matter of luck. If you don’t do anything towards ensuring success, failure will be the result.

They say heaven helps those who help themselves . Sometimes you need to take a step before things can fall in the right place.
