In the lineup of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animal, the first is the rat followed by the ox. And among the 12 zodiac animal, the rat is the smallest in size. There were many different version of historical story of how the lineup and orders were established. I would like to share with my readers one very interesting version that were told to me since young.

In ancient times, where time on earth is untracked, the deities get together to discuss and the decided to hold a running race amongst the animals on Earth. And the first 12 animals will be used to indicate years in the same order and every 12 years the cycle will be repeated.

The announcement were made to all the animals on Earth and each animal will send 1 representative so as not to be dominated by population.

And so the race flagged off, leading off the race was the ox and the rat was closely behind, but as the rat is smaller in size, he is constantly hit by the dust off the ox and he risk being stomped on should he fall, he derived a plan to be the mouse rider, he jumped onto the leg of the ox and drop off the ride just before finishing line to claim the top spot, little did the ox realize he lost the race to the mouse rider.
