"I am your eldest sister, I am not your mother" Jack always receives this reply when he asked Jane, his eldest sister for additional pocket money on top of allowance from his parents.

Despite always rejecting Jack verbally, Jane, who has a 10 years age gap with her younger brother will still provide additional support. As she's fully aware that their parents have aged, secondly, she's already working and understand fully what a teenager boy Jack is going through growing up. She also wishes for Jack not to go through what she went through as teenager.

In Asians culture, there's a saying, in the absence of parents, the eldest siblings would be like parents to the younger siblings. I believe this exist in other cultures not only Asians.

This is because a family function as a unit in society. And we have to take decision as a family. The head of the family, usually the father would be the decision maker. Thus, in the absence of parents, the decision would still have to be taken but by the eldest in like.

Thus, "I am not your mother" stand true for eldest siblings but the duty to shield and protect the younger ones would never change.
