The word neglect may be small, but we realize how deep of a mark it leaves on our lives when we find ourselves in bad situations. Neglect eats away at us from within. Today, I am sharing a story from my married life in a different way.
The first few years after Nilima's marriage were just like that. Cooking for everyone in a joint family, tidying up the house—despite doing everything, she seemed invisible. While everyone at the dining table talked, if Nilima tried to speak, her father-in-law would hide his face in the newspaper, and her mother-in-law would start a conversation about something else. Her husband, Akash, was also silent, thinking that 'living together' meant quietly enduring.

One day, Nilima fell very ill. With a high fever, she couldn't go to the kitchen. However, no one peeked into her room to see if she had eaten. Instead, she could hear her mother-in-law saying from the other room, "Today's lentils are completely salty; can you eat food cooked by the maid?"
In that moment, something broke inside Nilima. She realized that importance cannot be begged from others; it must be earned. After recovering, Nilima transformed her demeanor. She stopped making extra efforts to gain anyone's attention. She resumed her old hobby of drawing and began spending time on a small online business. Previously, she would wait to eat until everyone else had finished; now she ate her meals on time. When someone neglected her or talked down to her, she no longer sulked in her room and cried, but instead smiled and returned to her work.

One day, Akash asked in surprise, "Are you angry with us?" Nilima replied calmly, "No, Akash, I am just learning to love myself. Whether you value me or not, I now know I am precious."
Remarkably, as Nilima began to give importance to herself, the people in her family were gradually compelled to respect her. Because it is not easy for anyone in the world to neglect someone who does not neglect themselves.
Ultimately, the biggest truth is that your world begins with you. When you take care of yourself and stand on your own feet, the perspectives of people around you will begin to change.
