๐ŸŽฌ 2026 Movie Review #24 | 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007)

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. (All liquid earnings are used to get extra Hive Power Delegations!)

5 Centimeters Per Second is one of those titles that I have seen mentioned multiple times over the years and it has been on my list of anime movies to watch especially since it's only 63 minutes long. So I took this one along on an usb stick on my trip to Hua Hin to possibly watch and it turned out the only movie I watched that was not in the cinema there. It has been over a month since I watched it and to be honest, I remember the setting where I watched it a lot more compared much from the actual movie. I took a weekend trip with my girlfriend the Sam Roi Yot which was high on my list of things to do before coming to thailand and the trip was absolutely fantastic. The first night there we went for a walk on the road next to the beach to a fantastic restaurant. Once back, we layed in bed and ended up watching this movie in eachothers arms on the tv in the hotel resort we stayed at.

5 Centimeters Per Second (7.1/10)

It's actually hard for me to review this movie just like this as the only things I really remember is the fact that the animation was beautifull. It is directed by Makoto Shinkai who also did Your Name, Suzume, Weathering with You, & The Garden of Words of which the last 3 are on my watchlist now. Aside from this I still know it's about some kind of long distance relationship and that I was confused on who was who during the movie.

I actually watched a 11 minute Recap video which shows the entire story to freshen things up and have something to actually write about.

The movie tells a love story in 3 chapters each from a different period from the life of the main character Takaki. They are titled Cherry Blossom, Cosmonaut, and 5 centimeters per second.

In the first chapter we see that a boy and a girl who were in school together were separated by distance but kept in touch by writing letters. The day comes when Takaki takes a long train ride to her with the plan to go see the cherry blossom of which leafs fall at a pace of 5 centimeters per second. They separate ways again the day after and promise to keep in touch.

The 2nd part takes place many years later from the perspective of a girl who likes Takaki in his senior school. The 3rd part takes place when Takaki is working a busy job as a programmer where he drowns himself in work to distract himself because he's still in love with the girl. Their communication had stopped over the years and she kind of moved on while he kind of failed to until a certain point which is where the movie ends.

Conclusion
The setting where I watched that movie I always will remember and I guess that also kind of distracted me from the movie were I was not focused enough to fully be caught up with the story. Now watching a recap of it though, I want to see it again and think it might get a way higher score at the rewatch. The animation was beautiful and it made me a fan of Makoto Shinkai wanting to see more of his movies. So a modest 7.1/10 given that I remembered so little of if after watching, a rewatch kind of knowing the story likely would increase my score closer to 8/10

I'll share an unpopular opinion, but his films mostly look beautiful. I don't think there's much substance to them, though some disagree with me and other critics. I enjoy watching these anime in AMV format because they look amazing, but the actual animated films themselves were incredibly boring to me every time.

Besides this one, I have only seen your name and I kind of get where you are coming from even though I don't necessarily feel that way myself. I will have to check the others some day if I ever find the time.

If you feel like it, I recommend Wolf Children (a beautiful story about growing up and parenting), Perfect Blue (a dirty, mind-bending story showing how the media worked, how brutal fans can be, the fear of loneliness) or Silent Voice (a story of a modern deaf girl trying to be normal), Hotaru no haka (a damn sad story after WWII - even the toughest guy will cry).

It is clearly not one of Makoto-Sensei's best works, although his spectacular work in terms of animation and production must be admired. However, its plot and story don't evoke much, beyond the minor controversy it may have generated online at the time due to the relationship between two people of quite different ages.

Even so, the slow pace of the work, the way in which the anime focuses more on visual elements to tell the story even with few dialogues and dramatic moments, is not so bad. It's not an anime for fans of JJK or KNY to watch, as they are used to seeing works with a lot of action, movement, drama, humor, etc. But otherwise, if you're more of a fan of Slice of Life, you might love this movie.

I agree with your rating; I don't have many memories of this film either. I prefer watching Makoto-sensei's other movies.

I do think that this one (at least for me) will get better on a 2nd viewing. I'm also looking forward to watch more of his work.
