This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. So It's been over 25 days ago since I watched my last movie in the meantime watching and anime Barakamon & the Series Black Mirror Season 7. One of the issues for me is that I'm most days done quite late following the football matches while most movies these days are close to at least 2 hours which makes it that I get too tired near the end to 100% enjoy them. So yesterday I wanted to watch a shorter movie and I was browsing in my movies folder to look for something suitable that I picked up on my watchlist along the way and stranded with My Old Ass which I believe I heard mentioned in a Youtube video once or twice. Looking at the plot and the imdb score of 6.9/10 it was something worth the shot as these "lower-rated-movies" sometimes bring a nice surprise as the expectation is set rather low. So I kind had good hoped on this one as comedy-drama & coming of age is generally something I enjoy and it didn't dissapoint!

My Old Ass (7.7/10)

This one very much reminded me in a way of Cado Lake because the environment with the lake and the boat was very similar and the story setup also more or less went the same way even though both movies totally have diffent base plotlines.

Movie Plot (Spoiler Free):

"A mushroom trip brings free-spirited Elliott face-to-face with her 39-year-old self. But when Elliott's "old ass" delivers warnings to her younger self, Elliott realizes she has to rethink everything about her family, life and love."

The movie plot is nothing realistic but it doesn't pretend to be which makes it fine for me. The setup is that a girl meets her 39-year-old self from the future during a hallucination trip which somehow turns out to be real and the main advice that her 'old-ass' is telling her is to stay away from Chad which is a guy introduced a bit later in the movie. It's one of those things that was kind of predictable that was going to happen so there wasn't really a surprise when the guy she met in the late later on told his name was Chad. After that it was mainly the mystery of what Chad did that was so horrible for her future self and around halfway the movie I actually figured it out. In a way it kind of made me feel smart so I didn't mind that much that the twist didn't kick in.

There was also a nice family story arch and the setup of having your older self talk to you was just nice. The acting by the main character Elliott also worked really well both from the younger and older version which helped to make this movie believable.

Conclusion
The general message also was a nice one and overall I just enjoyed this movie which I watched at the right place and the right time. So for me it gets a solid 7.7/10 purely based on my enjoyment even though by no means it's anything special. If you like comedy-drama-romance-comingofage and look for a short movie to watch, I can highly recommend it.

The plot seems somewhat predictable and perhaps not so original, but sometimes these movies make us have a good time watching them and perhaps leave us with a good reflection on some aspect of our lives.

Exactly, I would say the 'good bad movie' type is one I just generally enjoy watching which in the end is what it's about. Especially on days where you don't want to watch something too serious.

never would have heard of this if it was not for what you wrote. I'll see if I can get a hold of it later this week.

Nice, it's one of the things that I really like about hive and the movies/tv/anime community. The 2 best things I watched so far this year (Paris, Texas & Death Note) I actually found out about by browing through some of the community content and there are so many others that I did not know about that now are bookmarked and on my potentual watchlist.

I agree. the reviews here aren't tainted by corporate interests or payoffs and people are normally quite honest about what they saw instead of trying to make certain things look good that aren't. I've found quite a few wonderful films by browsing the stacks of Hive and like you, have a massive backlog of films even though I can only watch one a day.

So I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. A good idea for a storyline and well executed. It made me a bit misty-eyed as well so well done, film!
