You Do Not Find Momentum, Your Build It

A friend of mine wanted to improve his body structure. He had pot belly, and he wanted to get rid of it, plus he also wanted to burn some fat and have muscles instead. So he registered in a nearby gym. He started by going there 3 times a week. At first, it looked slow and he did not even see an immediate result, but he stayed consistent. After a while, he started seeing some results. His belly fat started to reduces. By the time he did it for about 8 months, he was so impressed with his body. At this moment, he has built some packs over his abs. What started small turned into a very strong momentum. This goes to show that momentum is built over time, not found.

A lot of people are waiting for the right motivation to hit them before they take any step, some others are waiting for the right moment, the right opportunity, or even a sudden burst of energy that will push them into taking actions. What they believe is that once they feel "ready," everything will fall into line. But what they fail to understand is that momentum is not what you find, rather you have to build it. You may not feel like doing something, but when you start doing it, you will see yourself progressing in it. You do not have to wait until you are ready before you start. Start before you get ready, and keep moving even if you do not feel like it.

You have to understand that momentum does not start with feelings, but it starts with actions. You do not wait to feel motivated before you take any step, but you should take the step, then the motivation will follow. One of the hardest steps that you will ever take is the first step. This is because it often requires efforts without even the support of visible results. But when you take the step, you will be surprised how the subsequent steps will become easier. The action; which is the first step, will create movement, then the movement will create momentum.

Think of it as pushing a truck or another heavy object. The first push is often the hardest. You will have to overcome inertia, then overcome friction, and other restrictive forces. You may even struggle at the beginning, and it may look like nothing is happening, but as you keep pushing, it will gradually become easier. The object will begin to move easier and more smoothly. This is when you will begin to see the result of your actions. This is exactly how momentum works in other aspects of life. When you take the first step, and then keep moving, you will build up momentum with time and consistency.

One of the major undoings of a lot of people is that they quit too easily. They may start something new, like a new habit, a new skill, a new goal, or even a skill, but the moment they are not seeing immediate result, they will get discouraged and give up. What they fail to understand is that slow progress does not mean failure. They are simply quitting before even giving momentum a chance to build up. Understand that the result is not about the first step, but it is consistency that turns efforts into progress. If you want to build momentum, then you have to zero your mind that you will not give up even if things get tough.

The small actions that you may overlook matter more than you think. You do not need something massive to create momentum. The small consistent steps you take; like reading a few pages daily, practising a skill regularly, working on your goals bit by bit, etc, can create a very significant impact in your life over time. What seemed little, in the process of time, through consistency, will become powerful tomorrow.

It is worthy to also note that you need discipline to build momentum. It is true that motivation may get you started in the process, but to sustain you, you will need something more than that, you will need discipline. There may even be days when you will not feel like continuing. It is at this moment that you will determine if momentum will grow or not. But by choosing to keep going even when it is uncomfortable, you will build strength and consistency.

Peace on y'all
