Learning The Habit Of Follow-Through

A lot of people have great ideas but still lack the required results. They often start something with zeal, with excitement, they have big plans and all, but yet very little or nothing to show for it. What you need to understand is that one major difference that separates the people who succeed and those who do not is one habit. That is the habit of follow-through. This is simply the discipline to finish what you have started. It is not just about starting, but the power lies in finishing. Most times, the attempt will not be rewarded, not even the starting, but it is the results that will be rewarded.

Follow-through is what builds trust. If you constantly completes what you have started, either for yourself or for others, you will build trust and credibility in their sight and your sight. It will also make people to rely on your words. Trust me, you will not have problem believing someone who you know will always keep to their words anytime even if it is not convenient. Much more than that, you also learn to trust yourself. Self-trust has a way of building confidence. When you condition yourself to always follow-through even in little tasks, you will build the required commitment to do so even in much bigger tasks.

It is the habit of follow-through that makes a difference between impact and mere intention. Just to let you know; no matter how good and genuine your intentions are, they will still not create impact. What creates the impact is the completed action. There are some dreams that have failed, not because they were impossible nor because they were not potent enough, but because they were abandoned halfway. Starting may be easy because the motivation is always high at the start, but the real test of endurance comes when motivation may fade. It is your habit of follow-through that will keep you going even when the tasks become boring.

Follow-through also has a way to build discipline. This discipline is not about doing big things occasionally, but it is about doing the small thing consistently even when you do not feel like it. When you are committed to finishing any task you started no matter how small they are, you will develop on your mental strength. You will also learn how to move forward even in the midst of distractions, discomfort, and slow progress. If you are able to pull through certain tasks in your life, you can also transfer the habits to other tasks. Commitment in little tasks is also transfered into much bigger tasks. As a matter of fact, it is how you treat the little things presented to you that you will also treat the bigger things.

Another very important benefit of follow-through is that it builds momentum. Finishing a task will create a sense of progress within you, which will also fuel your motivation. If you do something and see result, no matter how small the result may be, it will motivate you to continue. But leaving many things halfway will easily lead to discouragement even for future tasks. This is why you need to learn how to finish tasks that you start. If you have plenty of unfinished assignments staring you in the face, getting more will only lead to discouragement. Learn to complete one before another.

To be able to develop the habit of follow-through, there are things you need to observe. Firstly, you have to start small, often with tasks that are easier. Make commitments that you can realistically finish. Even if you have something big to do, there will be a way to break it into manageable bits, so that it will become easier to undertake. Then also try to finish a task first before jumping into another one, so that you will not have unfinished tasks littered everywhere. Also try to reduce distractions and focus on the activities you have at hand. Finally, try to create things and systems that will supports completion. Things like having a to-do list, clear deadlines, reminders, etc. Also do not forget to celebrate your wins for every completed task, so as to give you the motivation to complete others.
