Building Momentum Towards Your Goal
Many people think that it is enough to set goals. But what they need to understand is that the goals will not achieve themselves. There is a need for constant and consistent progress. Some people begin the pursuit of their dreams with enthusiasm and excitement, but after a while, they will lose the motivation. They can be demotivated by slow movement, delayed result, distraction, unexpected challenges, and they will discover that what was once their dream is no longer among their top priority. You have to understand that momentum is what will keep you going even when the initial motivation has faded away. Once you have established momentum, progress becomes easy and better.

When I talk about building momentum, I do not mean you need to make a huge overnight change. More often than not, it is created by the small, deliberate, and repeated actions over time. When you want to move a car for example, you will need to start from the lower gear, because it is the heaviest and it will be required to overcome inertia and other resistive forces. But when you set it in motivation, it will become easier to move, and the journey will become smoother. In the same way, when you build momentum, achieving your goals will become a lot easier. Here are some practical ways by which you can build momentum towards achieving your desired goal.
The first one is to start small with easy and achievable actions. Imagine someone trying to start a manual transmission car from the 4th gear, he will try in futility. That is what happens when you try to run before you could walk. If you want to start a goal with a giant stride, you may be discouraged if the step did not go according to plan. One of the reasons why some people fail is because they try to accomplish too much at once. Having an extremely large goal can even discourage you from starting in the first place. What you have to do is to start with small tasks. When you complete them, it will give you the encouragement and the motivation to move higher.
In addition to this, you have to be consistent daily. Momentum is not what you build automatically or what comes with just one single large effort. Rather it is what you do daily, consistently, and constantly. It is far better to make small progress on a daily basis, than just putting one big effort once in a very long while. You have to learn to develop a routine that will suit the dream that you want to achieve. For example, if you want to become a web developer, you can make it a point of duty to be practising a few lines of code everyday. Before you know it, you will gain expertise in coding. It is your daily consistency that turns productive actions into habit, which also makes progress feel natural.

Another way to build momentum is to deal with the obstacles that may slow you down. If you do not remove obstacles from your way, they may have the possibility to slow you down. The obstacles that you should remove can include bad habit, distractions, and the things that regularly interrupt your progress. For example, if you know that you cannot concentrate and study for 30 minutes straight when you are with your phone, then to solve the problem, you can put your phone on DND when you want to study. You need to identify what can become an obstacle to your progress and then stop it so that it will not stop you from progressing.
The next way to develop and sustain momentum is to always keep your purpose in front of you. When you know the reason why you are doing something, it will be easy to sustain yourself in it even when the motivation has faded. Make a list of your goals and what matters to you. This will give you a sense of purpose, which will also give you the determination to keep going even when the journey becomes difficult. It is worthy to note that when pursuing your goals, momentum is one of your greatest advantages. At the end of the day, you will realise that success rarely come as a result of one extraordinary actions, but as a result of your consistent and repeated daily actions.
