What I’d Tell Anyone Leaving School Today - From a Graduate’s Lens
If there’s one thing I’ve come to understand after leaving school and stepping fully into life, it’s that the real world isn’t as smooth or straightforward as we thought it would be in school. So if I had to give some advice to anyone leaving school today, I’d say this: be ready, because this new phase is not a joke.
I studied Electrical Engineering, and I know what it felt like finishing secondary school with high hopes, dreaming about university, success, and everything just lining up perfectly. But life doesn’t always work like that. There’s no straight path. Sometimes, you’ll have to go through detours. And that’s okay.
After school, everybody starts asking “What’s next?” like you’re supposed to have all the answers immediately. Don’t let that pressure sink into your chest. You don’t need to figure it all out at once. Some people will go to uni fast, some will start a hustle, some might even seem stuck, but each one has their own clock. Don’t compare your time with anyone else’s.
One thing I wish I took more seriously earlier is skill acquisition. School is important, no doubt, but what you can do with your hands and mind outside school is what really puts food on the table. Whether it’s tech, graphics, repairs, cooking, writing, or anything, learn something. Don’t wait till you’re desperate.
Also, be careful with the people you keep around. After school, friends start to show their real colors. Some will be supportive, some will envy you, and some are just distractions. Choose your circle wisely. It can either push you forward or drag you back.
For the guys, I get it, the urge to blow quick is real. But fast money usually ends fast too. If you start slow but legit, you’ll sleep better at night. I’ve seen people my age run into problems they can’t even explain, just because they wanted to move too fast. Be wise. Build quietly.
And for the ladies, don’t let anyone rush you into a life you’re not ready for. You’re allowed to dream big, work hard, and choose your own timing. There’s more to life than just settling down early. Build your value first.
Lastly, don’t lose your morals. No matter how hard things get, don’t let it change who you are. The world will test your patience, your faith, your plans, but hold on. Keep learning, stay humble, and never stop praying. You’ve come this far, and there’s still a long way to go.

Thanks for the advice sir, even school life is not as easy as people paint it to be, I know the situation of things and the economy of my country, so I think we should be ready even before we leave school.

I totally agree with you on choosing friends after school, because atimes not everyone that smiles with you is truly your friend. Some are enemies with friendly faces. Thank you for sharing.
