Weekend engagement. Week # 267- More Than a Customer: My Unexpected Grandmother
Life has a unique way of introducing people to us, people who begin as strangers but end up occupying special places in our hearts. That’s how I met Mama Rose. She wasn’t a relative, not even a friend at the beginning. She was simply a customer, one of the many who walked into my shop. But today, I consider her nothing less than a grandmother.
Our relationship started with the usual greetings and short conversations. Mama Rose had a calm, gentle presence. She never rushed her words, and even when she wasn’t buying anything, she would stop by just to say hello. At first, I thought she was just being friendly, but with time, her visits felt more intentional like she truly cared.
I began to notice how she paid attention to the little details. If I looked tired, she would ask if I was eating well or getting enough rest. She would bring fruits from her garden and sometimes cooked meals, especially when she felt I needed a treat. I remember once when I had a headache and couldn’t hide my discomfort. She reached into her bag and handed me a small bottle of balm. “Rub this,” she said, “and sit down for a while.” Her voice was soft but firm, just like how a grandmother would speak.
What touched me most how she asked me about my relationship and adviced me like my mother would on how to maintain my relationship and further prayed for me. She went aheead to tell me never to think about my late mother , that she was going to be there to take good care of me when I'm married and put to birth.

Now, our bond goes beyond the shop. We check up on each other. She tells me stories of her youth, and I share my struggles and dreams with her. She has become my listener, my adviser, my source of warmth. There’s a peace I feel in her presence, one that reminds me I’m not alone.
People often assume she’s my biological grandmother, and honestly, I don’t correct them. Not because I want to deceive anyone, but because love doesn’t always follow the lines of blood. Sometimes, love finds you in a customer who becomes your family.
I thank God for Mama Rose. She’s a gift I never asked for but one I’ll always cherish. Her life has taught me that family can be chosen, and love can be found in the most unexpected places.
