My grandmother is one of the strongest and most energetic women I have ever known. Even in her old age, she remains vibrant and always on her feet. She had been my grandpa’s loyal partner, working side by side with him until his death.

When he passed on, I thought she would grow weak and perhaps retire from the farm work they had always done together. But to my surprise, she grew even stronger. She often tells me, “I need to carry on the work even when my partner is no more. I believe he passed his strength to me before he left. And so I must use that strength, together with mine, to work and never retire.”

Despite our pleas for her to rest at home while we provide for her and even hire workers, she refuses. For her, working is more than survival, it is joy. On holidays, we travel to stay with her, and we join her in the farm. Nothing makes her happier than seeing us by her side, helping her continue the work that keeps her spirit alive.
