Why Honest Workers Become Rumors' Victims in Office Politics

Office is such a place where only work skills are not enough. Relationships, communication, and image management are equally important. Often it is seen that you are working honestly, fulfilling responsibilities, yet rumors are being spread about you. Which is extremely harmful to your career. Yet the one who is the real culprit gets away.

Why does such a situation happen? Let us understand the matter with real examples.

1. Becoming a victim of office politics

Where there are people, there is politics. Office is no exception. A colleague may deliberately spread rumors because they cannot tolerate your progress or reputation.

Real example:
Suman worked in a bank. Being hardworking, the boss had trust in her. This did not sit well with colleague Rina. Rina secretly started spreading among other colleagues that. Suman is the boss's favorite, so she is given more opportunities. Although in reality nothing like that was true. As a result, Suman's image was damaged, yet Rina remained safe.

2. Finding a victim becomes easy

In office, there is always a search for a scapegoat. If someone makes a mistake, often the blame is shifted to someone who is quiet by nature or weak in self-defense.

Real example:
In Mahir's team, a project got delayed. The real reason was the senior developer's long leave. But in the meeting, it was seen that the blame was placed on Mahir. Because he is new, inexperienced, and not confident enough to protest. The team leader covered for the real culprit, and the rumor spread that the project was delayed because of Mahir.

3. Lack of image management

You may do excellent work, but if you do not regularly interact with colleagues, wrong impressions about you are formed, and rumors become easily believable.

Real example:
Arif is an engineer. He was focused only on his own work, did not gossip with anyone. Suddenly one day, a rumor started in the office that Arif was supposedly going to quit his job. He said nothing, nor provided any proof. Everyone assumed the talk was true. Yet in reality, he had no intention of quitting. His silence strengthened the rumor.

4. The culprit's network being strong

In office, if the real culprit is influential or close to the boss, no one dares to spread anything negative about them. Rather, it is easier to shift the blame to someone with less influence.

Real example:
In Tahsin's team, a senior manager always submitted project files late. But he was very close to the boss. So when work got delayed in the team, the rumor spread that junior employee Tahsin did not fulfill responsibilities properly. The boss also accepted the rumor as true without investigating.

5. Considering your good nature as weakness

Those who are straightforward, honest, and simple often become easy targets in office. Because if rumors are spread against them, they do not show much counter-reaction.

Real example:
Lubna behaved well with everyone in the office, did not get into trouble with anyone. Once a rumor started that she supposedly shares information with another team. She remained silent without protesting. As a result, many believed it to be true. The real culprit stayed hidden.

So what should you do?

  • Build an image. Regularly keep in touch with colleagues so that wrong impressions do not arise.

  • If there is a rumor, do not stay silent. Clearly let it be known what the truth is.

  • Keep documentation. Always preserve proof of work, emails, or reports.

  • Build a trusted network. Trust a few colleagues who can provide proof.

  • Stay professional. Respond logically instead of showing emotional reactions.

Conclusion

Spreading rumors in office is often a weapon to protect others' interests. In this, the real culprit gets away, and the innocent suffers. But remember, with proper communication, keeping proof, and being aware of self-defense, the impact of rumors can be greatly reduced. Just being a good employee is not enough; to survive in office, you have to protect your own image and position as well.

Why are you using the #hl-exclusive tag when your post is not in weekly featured content, and for a college student, how can you know that this is how work politics takes place?

I am very sorry for this. I am a new member in this community. I thought this was a tag for this community. So I put it by mistake. Can you forgive me and please remove the downvote? This is my sincere request to you. And I assure you that no such mistake will happen in the future.

And I learned about workplace politics from my father. He have been facing these problems for the past few months.

It's only peanuts, and you are fully extracting the rewards, so DV stays.
