The Future of FULL Self-Driving Cars

It's quite curious, and worth starting by talking about, that yesterday or the day before yesterday I saw a video discussing exactly this topic of Self-Driving Cars, which addressed the promises that we would have a completely autonomous car in the coming years. The video specifically discussed the promises made by Elon Musk, who owns Tesla, one of, or the largest, electric car manufacturers in the world.

Unlike X (formerly Twitter), which was bought by Elon Musk and became a privately held company, meaning he doesn't necessarily have to answer questions or commit to deadlines, Tesla is a publicly traded company, so there are meetings with shareholders and Elon Musk himself answers questions from the press. And speaking of promises, the video highlighted that every year when he was asked about the autonomous car issue, the answer was next year, or in two years, and the curious fact is that this has been happening for some time now.

This issue of constant promises of a new business model, which would be a self-driving car without any human intervention, has begun to raise doubts about the real possibility of this happening. Is a car without human supervision, or without extensive prior analysis of the roads, something possible and accessible to the public? Sometimes it might even be possible, but what would the cost be? How would the servers be maintained? How would the collected data be used? There are a number of questions about this topic that have not yet been fully answered.

Will we have Self-Driving Cars in the FUTURE?

To think about the future, we first have to understand our present. Analyzing current autonomous cars, it's important to highlight two points. The first is that they don't drive completely alone, because in many cases it's mandatory for the driver to be attentive to act at any moment and take control of the automatic steering. This alone shows that the company itself cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that there will be no errors or problems.

It's interesting to think in terms of percentages, because let's say it was written that self-driving works 99% of the time, would you trust your life to risk being part of the 1% where it might malfunction? I believe many would avoid that, and that may be precisely why companies require human supervision.

The second problem is a matter of technology. The autonomous cars that exist today, and I believe there are some that can drive certain stretches without a driver, generally have a human remotely supervising, and another detail is that the company has already done a complete mapping of the area that will be the route.

This mapping issue is another fundamental one, because it's quite uncommon, at least I don't remember hearing anyone talk about it, for any company to provide self-driving services to any region. How do these cars handle an unfamiliar or uneven road? Can they avoid unusual things that weren't considered by the algorithms, like something coming from the sky?

Finally, still on the subject of technology, the number of parameters and variables that these cars must analyze to be able to operate on any highway is enormous, and recently, in Tesla's own case, it was said that the cars will need upgrades to be able to store more data and process more parameters. Will that be enough? Could we be in a bubble of self-driving cars? Only the future will tell!

É bem curioso, e vale a pena começar falando sobre isso, é que ontem ou antes de ontem eu vi um vídeo falando exatamente sobre esse tema de Self-Driving Cars, que abordava sobre as promessas de que teríamos um carro completamente autônomo, nos próximos anos. O vídeo falava de forma específica sobre as promessas feitas pelo Elon Musk, que é o dono da Tesla, uma das, ou a maior, empresa montadora de carros elétricos do mundo.

Diferente do X (antigo Twitter) que foi comprado pelo Elon Musk e se torno uma empresa de capital fechado, o que significa que ele não precisa necessariamente responder as perguntas e se comprometer muito à prazos, a Tesla é uma empresa de capital aberto, então existe reuniões com os acionistas e o próprio Elon Musk responde dúvidas à imprensa. E falando sobre as promessas, no vídeo foi ressaltado, que todo ano quando ele era perguntado sobre a questão do carro autônomo, a resposta era no próximo ano, ou daqui a dois anos, e o fato curioso é que isso já vem acontecendo à um tempo.

Essa questão de promessas constantes de um novo modelo de negócio, que seria um carro com direção automática, sem intervenção humana nenhuma, tem começado à levantar dúvidas sobre a possibilidade real disso acontecer. Será que um carro sem supervisão humana, ou sem uma ampla análise anterior das vias é algo possível e acessível ao público? As vezes pode até ser possível, mas e qual seria o custo disso? Como os servidores seriam mantidos? Como os dados coletados seriam utilizados? Existe uma série de dúvidas sobre esse tema, que ainda não foram totalmente respondidas.

No FUTURO teremos Self-Driving Cars?

Para pensarmos no futuro, primeiro temos que entender o nosso presente. Analisando os carros autônomos atuais, é importante ressaltar dois pontos. O primeiro é que eles não dirigem completamente sozinhos, porque em muitos casos é obrigatório o motorista estar atento para agir a qualquer momento e tomar a direção do controle automático. Isso por si só já mostra que a própria empresa não consegue garantir com 100% de certeza de que não haverá erros e nem problemas.

É interessante pensar em termos de porcentagem, porque digamos que estivesse escrito que o self-driving funciona 99%, você confiaria a sua vida em arriscar fazer parte do 1%, em que ele pode apresentar um defeito? Acredito que muitos evitariam isso, e esse pode ser justamente o motivo das empresas exigirem a supervisão humana.

O segundo problema é uma questão de tecnologia. Os carros autônomos que existem hoje e acredito que existam alguns que conseguem dirigir certos trechos sem um motorista, tem geralmente algum humano fazendo a supervisão de forma remota e um outro detalhe é que a empresa já fez um mapeamento completo da área que será do trajeto.

Essa questão de mapeamento é outra fundamental, porque é bem incomum, pelo menos não me lembro de ter ouvido ninguém falar sobre, alguma empresa fornecer o serviço de self-driving à qualquer região. Como que esses carros lidam com uma pista não conhecida, ou uma pista irregular? Será que eles consegue desviar de coisas incomuns, que não foram pensadas pelos algoritmos, como algo vindo do céu?

Por fim, ainda na tecnologia, a quantidade de parâmetros e variáveis que esses carros devem analisar para serem capazes de atuar em qualquer rodovia é gigantesca e recentemente no próprio caso da tesla foi dito que os caros vão precisar de upgrade para conseguir armazenar mais dados e processar mais parâmetros. Será que isso será o suficiente? Podemos estar em uma bolha de carros self-driving? Só o futuro nos dirá!
