400K Steps a Month! Upped my summer walking!

I noticed a little while ago on my Garmin Connect account that my record step count in a month was around 360K.

That's just over 10K steps a day which is around the average daily steps... there isn't much variation in my monthly step rate, it's always around the low 300Ks a month.

However, there is some unsurprising variation in that I walk less in Winter and more in Summer - longer and warmer days, it hardly needs explaining why!

A new 400K step goal...

So I decided to set myself a 400K steps in a month goal for last month, July, and I made it pretty easily.. with a total of 415K

Screenshot 2024-08-21 at 16.56.54.png

It's only JUST above the usual month averages, by around 10%, but that 10% extra is around 2500 steps a day more than what I usually do - or 2.5kS or around 30 mins at slow walking pace, it's quite a chunk of time!

I'm on for August too...

It was never my intention but I think I'm gonna hit 400K in August too...

My average daily steps are just under 13333, which is what you'd need to do 400K steps over a 30 day period, and that's with one day to spare for August.

Note I had ONE day in the last 30 I didn't make my 10K a day a goal, I think it's good to not be too obsessive about streaks, sometimes it's just natural to break them, flow of life and all.

And sometimes it's natural to go a lot harder, with three days over 20K steps in August.

It's all about building it into your daily life...

I've upped my running which is a HUGE contributor to my total!

Besides this I do more morning walks and do two trips into town to break up the day rather than one, on non run days, which works for me too.

Don't force it too much is my advice.

Final thoughts - on maintaining 400K a month....

I think maybe it's a good goal for the summer months, but I'll let it slide to 300K for winter, it feels natural that it's seasonal!

It's also quite beneficial for one's physical and mental health one feels!

That's a lot of steps. You will be doing far more than the recommended weekly exercise as you run a fair bit. My steps varies a lot depending on whether I've been to the office or for a run. Some days I hardly leave the house, but I think I'll be fine. I wear out enough shoes as it is and I'm due for new running shoes.

Update: I don't often look at the Garmin data as I use Strava for runs, but just had a look. I'm actually managing around 300k steps most months with a max of 380k. More than I thought.

Your total sounds like the same as mine, the exact same amount of variation. I find on normal run days I'm at 12-13K, long run 20K and non run days around 5-8K.

I don't obsess about the 10K daily goal, it's much easier to just get into a habit of walking a lot as part of yr daily routine.

Although TBH I'm really wanting to just move more diversely rather than walking only - yoga/ tai chi/ dancing/; gardening.

I have to take the watch off for certain activities... Once I was stirring porridge after a run and went through my 10K goal, and if I left it on during a drum circle, I'd hit 10K in no time!

It's not THAT accurate! (NB I always take it off when drumming!)

Whether it's cold or hot, we all should walk every day, it keeps our health good.

400K steps? Nice! I'm way behind on that since I injured my knee. But it's slowly getting better, and I've even started jogging a bit. I really need to get moving again or find some other form of exercise. I can definitely feel the difference, I'm more tired when doing things because I haven't been as active.

You have to be careful when injured, slowly and steady for the comeback push it as much as you can, go with the feel! It's an effort I know just keep on going!
