XPENG's humanoid robot parades before the public

In a luxury shopping center in Shenzhen, people were walking between display cases when they noticed something out of the ordinary, a humanoid crossing the space with calm steps, upright posture and quite natural movements, it was Iron, XPENG's humanoid robot, making its public debut outside the laboratories.

Not as a technical experiment, but as a social presence, the message behind this appearance is powerful, before robberies trains and homes, they first need to learn to exist among people and existing is not just executing tasks, it is moving in a way that does not cause strangeness. XPENG claims that this effect comes from a body architecture directly inspired by human anatomy.

Iron has a bionic spine with 5 degrees of freedom combined with a set of hips designed to allow smooth trunk oscillations similar to those of a real body when walking. Under the clothing there is a 3D printed lattice structure that functions as a kind of artificial musculature. This layer is not only for aesthetics, it absorbs vibrations, reduces impacts and eliminates the classic pattern of robotic gold movements in rigid blocks.

The result is a more fluid walk, less mechanical, we could say even more organic, even so, the engineers noticed an important detail, the hands used in this demonstration still belong to a previous generation of hardware, that is, XPENG is not showing the robot in its final form, it is showing something intermediate and that reveals a clear strategy. Before proving that a robot can lift boxes, tighten screws or operate machines, the company wants to demonstrate that it can be next to a human without causing discomfort.

The above is perhaps the most difficult challenge in robotics, because it is not a problem of torque, nor sensors, nor algorithms, it is a psychological problem. To support this vision, XPENG developed what it calls body logic, a base architecture that allows creating different variations of the same body, taller, more compact, lighter or more robust, without breaking the balance and naturalness of the movements.

In addition, the company rebuilt its reinforcement learning systems from scratch so that the robot maintains a stable gait even when parts of the hardware change, this is essential for scale production. And scale production has already begun, the company confirmed that the first unit, a robot designed under automotive standards, has already left the assembly line. For me the real milestone here is not technological, it is cultural, because it is not enough to walk among us, it is necessary to look like us and that is already happening.

Sorry for my Ingles, it's not my main language. The images were taken from the sources used or were created with artificial intelligence
