Controlling robots with the mind is already a reality.

It is a fact that robots are learning to walk, manipulate objects, and even converse with people in increasingly natural ways; however, despite advances in artificial intelligence, robots still struggle to interpret human thoughts and translate them into reliable actions.


The Chinese brain-computer interface company BrainCo claims to have solved this problem to some extent with its integrated brain-robot platform. Instead of relying on keyboards, joysticks, or voice commands, it developed a platform capable of directly interpreting the user's brain activity to control robots—and, perhaps more importantly, to teach them to better understand human behavior.


Unveiled at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, the platform combines brain-computer interfaces with artificial intelligence in a system the company describes as the first integrated brain-robot ecosystem. The goal is not merely to control machines with thought, but to create a far more intuitive form of interaction between people and machines.


It all begins with a cap-like device equipped with electroencephalography sensors that record the tiny electrical signals naturally produced by the brain and detected at the scalp; unlike brain implants, this method is completely non-invasive and requires no surgical procedure. These signals are sent to artificial intelligence algorithms capable of identifying patterns associated with the user's intention to move.

Instead of interpreting pre-programmed words or commands, the system seeks to understand what the person intends to do at that moment; once that intention is identified, it is converted into digital commands capable of controlling various types of robots. During demonstrations, the platform was used to control robotic arms, humanoid robots, and even robotic dogs. In one example, a mechanical arm successfully identified the user's intent and grasped objects—such as an apple or a cup—using only signals captured via EEG; however, according to BrainCo itself, the technology's greatest potential may not lie in controlling hands.


The true objective is to resolve one of the major bottlenecks in modern robotics: the lack of high-quality training data. Currently, robots need to observe thousands of human demonstrations to learn simple tasks, yet they often fail to grasp exactly why a person chose a specific movement. By directly recording brain activity during these demonstrations, the company believes it is possible to create much richer datasets, combining human intent, the robot's executed movement, and virtual simulations into a single learning process.


This would enable the training of artificial intelligences capable of understanding not only how a task is performed but also the intention behind the action. Naturally, significant challenges remain: EEG-based interfaces capture much weaker signals than brain implants, making interpretation more susceptible to noise and interference. Furthermore, BrainCo has not yet released detailed results regarding accuracy and performance in real-world settings, meaning the technology will still need to undergo independent validation before large-scale adoption; nevertheless, the proposal points to an interesting shift in the future of robotics.
