Germany is building a giant gym for humanoid robots, the project is called TUM RoboGym and is being developed through a collaboration between the Technical University of Munich and the company NEURA Robotics. The center is being built near Munich airport and will have around 2,300 m² of area.

The facility will function as a large training ground where hundreds of humanoid robots will be able to repeatedly learn tasks while being guided by human instructors. The total investment in the project reaches almost $20,000,000. According to the researchers involved, the objective is to create an environment where robots can acquire general skills that can then be applied in different real-world situations.

Among those tasks include activities seemingly simple for humans, but extremely complex for machines, folding boxes, manipulating tools, assembling industrial components. The CEO of Neura robotics, David Reg, believes that the true differential of the next generation of robots is not only in the mechanics, but in the training data. According to him, whoever has the best physical data of interaction with the real world will set the pace of the robotic revolution, which is why the center must host hundreds of robos training continuously, creating a huge data bank of physical movements.

In addition to research, the place will also be used to train engineers and students in new robotics and artificial intelligence technologies. In the midst of growing technological competition between the United States, China and Europe, the German researchers make it clear that the project has a strategic objective, ensuring that Europe also has a relevant role in the next great industrial evolution, the era of intelligent robots, working alongside humans.
