Examinations: A System That Tests Endurance More Than Intelligence

The exam month is that time when every student's life goes completely haywire, whether it's school, college, or preparing for any competitive exam. The month leading up to the exam is terrible because the exam timetable is released. You're living your normal life, and then suddenly you enter panic mode: "The exam is coming! I haven't studied anything! I have to start studying again!" And then it becomes a terrible routine where you study all night, wake up in the morning, and study again, neglecting your food and sleep. You go from a normal routine to a very unhealthy one. You begin to sacrifice everything, transforming your life into a prison—studying tirelessly all day, with a persistent sense that there is a deadline to complete the syllabus.

When the exam schedule or timetable is released, the first impact is on our minds. It completely disrupts our mental peace, and all we can think about is what will happen. Will I be able to finish everything in time for the exam? If I don't finish the syllabus, how will I pass? If I don't pass, my parents will be angry. These are the kinds of thoughts that constantly run through our minds. When you do something under pressure, your work won't be effective. You should always do your work with a clear mind; that's the only way you'll succeed. If you do something under pressure, it will never work out. If you keep thinking about not getting good marks, you'll just waste your time. So, don't think about it. Just get up in the morning and do your work.

The greatest pressure during exam time doesn't come from within the student. It comes from external sources, such as parents who have high expectations and put pressure on them, saying things like, "Surely your son will clear the JEE or NEET exam," or relatives who start asking questions like, "It's been so many years; you'll pass this time, won't you?" If you're in school, they ask, "Will you top the class this time? Will you achieve great things this time?" Because of all these expectations and the pressure to live up to them, we feel even more stressed. And because of this substance, students don't focus much on their studies. Therefore, I would like to request every parent not to put so much pressure on their children during exam time. If you put too much pressure on them, they will lose focus on their studies. They will be more stressed that way.

The biggest challenge of exams is that they don't just test knowledge but also stress management. Students who can handle the pressure and stay calm perform better than those who can't. Some people naturally get very stressed, while others tend to overthink. The exam system mostly causes problems for those who struggle with these things, and what they finally write in the exam is often incorrect. This is something that causes a lot of anxiety for students, and it's very important to address. If you study consistently for 1 year, you won't be afraid of exams because you'll be fully prepared. Those who study diligently never fear exams. But it's the students who don't study consistently throughout the year who suffer the most, because if you study all year, you'll never be afraid of exams.

Tonight, I'll just say that exams are stressful and they put a lot of strain on us. They change our life cycle, they change our sleeping cycle, and they can be very challenging. We can't deny that, and every student experiences this and struggles with it. The important thing is to understand that we are not alone. We need support, and this is just a phase. Once we pass and the exams are over, the tension gradually decreases, and life feels normal again. And while exams are tough, they teach us so much: how to handle peer pressure, how not to compare ourselves to others, how to manage pressure, how to meet expectations, and how to give our best. Exams teach us all these things.
