Is Innovation Dead? Why Consumers Aren’t Upgrading Phones Anymore
There was a time when having a phone seemed like a big deal or a luxury thing. In my father time there are , only one or two people used to have a phone in the village. At that time, a phone with a small keypad was a significant achievement, and today it has gradually evolved to the level of smartphones. Every year every brand brings a new model with new features and new cameras and we used to buy them without thinking, but nowadays a strange swiftness is being seen. People have reduced buying phones because they do not consider innovation at all in today's date.
Not every brand innovates much in its phone. The same model of Samsung's phone is very popular, or you can say the design is also made with the same technology, and everything is not made by just changing the internal process. Apple has also been making the same kind of phone for the last 5-6 years. Its last innovation was the iPhone 11 which came after the iPhone 10, from the same design it is continuing till 16. Just a single thing changed but overall the design are same. There is no innovation, that is why people stopped buying the phone in today's market.
Why is the demand for smartphones decreasing and the number of people buying them decreasing because innovations are happening? Every brand is busy making new phones. How to innovate, but why is it happening? Today there is not just one simple reason for this. There are many reasons for this like the economy of some places has become very bad. There is no money and in some places, people have understood that a phone easily lasts for 5-6 years so there is no need to buy a new phone for it.
Today smartphone is not just a need. It is just a usage so I think that if you have a decent phone then you can easily use it for 5 6 years and today where there is a phone like iPhone, it is expensive, but that phone lasts for a long time, so the demand for all these phones is decreasing because they have made their phone better by doing good innovation. That is why no one bought mine.
There could be other reasons also like the slowing down of technology, earlier everyone used to try some innovation with the phone. First came the touchscreen. Then came the fingerprint lock, then dual camera or fast charging from many brands. A new operating system came. One can say Android, but there has not been much innovation in the phones, there has been some excitement, but the phone which we have, gets a new one in a slightly upgraded version, so it does not make sense to buy a new phone every 3 years, with all the same apps, the same features, if the processor and camera get updated then we can use it. We can use Old phones and this mindset has developed nowadays.
The second and it seems to be the reason. That is the increase in the number of refurbished phones. How am I, today the market for second-hand phones has become quite popular. Many new companies have come up with it and many new ones like the ones which cost Rs. 80000, give up to Rs. 15000 for an iPhone and also give a 1-year warranty, so it makes a lot of sense to buy it and I used it once, then I feel that these people give a good warranty and refurbish it very well. Refund means that all your parts are replaced, so you get it at a very cheap price. It feels very good and if people have retirement and need, it is also fulfilled, so in today's date do not buy a new phone. Refurbishing is doing more of that.
Software support has increased. Earlier, phones used to get software updates for 2 years. After that, the phone used to get updated but today's companies In order to sell their phone, bring four software updates of the server, so what is the need for my 5-year-old phone to get the same software update in the latest phone? I have no reason left to buy a new phone to buy your phone.
Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, everything has its royal customer but now this royal custom is slowly coming to an end. When the new model does not bring any significant difference in it or the same thing is coming and other brands are not able to do any upgrade in it, so many people switch to different places I also used to use at least one Realme phone earlier. I have used only Realme phones in the last 10 years but now I am shifting to Motorola because I like its features more and I am more satisfied with the price and features, so why should I not shift to Motorola?
So in conclusion I would like to say that bad purchases are not just a problem in the mobile industry. There is a new mindset in which people spend money after thinking and if seen carefully, it is a good thing but very bad for the companies, and perhaps this is the new identity of our understanding and principles. If we ask just one question before buying a phone. Do we need this, then the answer to it will be that no, no, we need it, why should we spend on it?
