A Nation’s Grief in the Wake of Fire
On 12th June 2025, around noon, an Air India A1-71 flight headed from Ahmedabad to London took off and Around 1:38 PM, it reached a height of about 625 feet and everything was normal but after 30 seconds, the aircraft started losing control. The pilot gave a mayday, which was a signal that something very big had happened and that the plane was descending rapidly. It crashed in the Meghaninagar area in a hostel. A hostel where medical students and some staff lived. Those who were there on the ground told that a small blast took place. Then a huge bomb was seen rising from the sky. A part of the building collapsed. There are medical students inside the hostel. The fire brigade, ambulance, and police arrived immediately. But by then there was no hope. Everything had changed and it took 3 hours to extinguish the fire.
There were a total of 230 passengers and 12 crew members on the flight and immediately after the crash, officers said that it was unlikely that anyone had survived. More than 30 people were also affected on the ground. Hostel student workers staff reported at the hospital that around 270 drops had been found Mostly charred, whose identification can be done only through DNA tests. When everything was over, there was news. One person was found alive. 40-year-old British Indian Vishwa Kumar Rameshwar was sitting on seat 11A. He saved his life by jumping from the emergency after the plane crashed. He was a little bit burning in the journey and in grief, but he was alive when he said that somehow he saw everything going on in front of him, everyone's face was only distress and grief.
The place where the plane crashed was the hospital of MBBS College Medical. Many MBBS students were studying there. They were resting. Many junior doctors also lived there. This hostel was once full of life but now everything has become a broken memory. Some students died, some were seriously injured and some were in the hospital. The firefighters put in full effort to control the fire. The local people helped a lot in the rescue operation of the NDRF team which came to the site. Some people tried to go inside the building at their own risk and save the people. But the fire was so intense that no one could even go up to 10 meters.
The next day after the crash, the aviation team recovered the corrupted voice records and flight data records, but there is still debate as to what exactly was the technical issue. Was it an engine failure? Was it the pilot's fault or was it the system manufacturer's fault? The report is expected in three months. Many flight experts had done a lot of flying, so they expected something possible. What could have happened was that there was a technical issue with the flaps or landing gear. The take-off was not set properly. The pilots had set the configuration wrongly. There was no medical failure that dictated the start of the fire feet, all these experts believe this, but the result of the property investigation that has been done so far has not come out yet, it will take some time for it to come.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself visited the crash site. He appreciated the rescue team and met the affected people. He said that this is a national tragedy for us and every Vikram is important for us and the central government jointly announced a relief plan. Tata owner Air India also issued an official statement on Rs ₹10 crore compensation for victims. Air India said please understand by saying that the families who are affected will be provided full support. Tata Group announced a relief fund of Rs 10 crore and the CEO of Air India said that all similar flights are being inspected so that such incidents can be avoided in the future.
Just imagine the people who would have come to see their family or a cross relative. They would never have thought that this would be their last goodbye. Outside the hospital, a father was shouting, “My son was in the hospital. Just tell me if he is alive or not.” A mother said, “I will just get a little peace of mind after meeting him. I will recognize him.” Right now identification is difficult through DNA tests. This is a trauma that can never end. This crash in this plane has united the whole country. The hashtag Ahmedabad Plane Crash Training is going on everywhere on Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. People have expressed their sympathy, and some have started blood donation campaigns. Fitness accounts have shared videos and CCTV footage, and everyone is saying just one thing even an enemy should not die like this.
Finally, I would like to say that it was a very big tragedy that left a very, very big impact on the country. It was someone's mistake. We cannot say it. It could be a technical fault or it could be any fault that failed both engines, but the failure rate is 0.01%. If both engines of a plane fail, then it must be someone's mistake that they did not check the safety checks. Or it was the pilot's mistake as well, but the pilot who was flying it had 11000 plus hours of experience, so it was not like he was an experienced pilot.
