Joto Kando Kolkatatei Review | A Nostalgic Journey That Needed More Mystery

The film Joto Kando Kolkatatei was created with great affection for Feluda and Satyajit Ray. You can see right away the creators were trying to emulate the charm of those old detective stories. It does a wonderful job of capturing that feeling, but it just doesn't have the tension and thrill I was hoping for.

The story is of a young detective enthusiast who solves a case which is connected to one that Feluda himself could not solve decades ago. It sounds like a great interesting concept but the mystery never becomes as exciting as it should. There’s hardly much excitement as most of the twists are expected.

What I liked best about the movie is its homey and welcoming vibe. It has a straightforward appeal that makes you smile. Every place appears stunning on screen, whether it's the picturesque hills of North Bengal or the historic city of Kolkata. Both locations are warmly and honestly captured in the film, giving them a sense of life.

The movie also makes numerous allusions to Feluda's world, Bengali literature, and culture. Satyajit These little details wouldn't escape the notice of Ray devotees. Sometimes they can be enjoyable and sometimes they get a little too typical, making the movie feel like a tribute more than a unique narrative.

Special mention should be paid to Debojyoti Mishra’s background score.Even when the tale slows down, it creates a lovely mood and lends emotion to several passages. While the other songs don't make much of an impression and frequently break the flow, the title song is very memorable.

One of the movie's best features is undoubtedly Abir Chatterjee. The guy's character and screen presence are just right for this sort of investigative thriller. The movie is getting better every time he is on screen. Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed as the lead does a decent job too although I believed her character needed more emotional nuance. Although there was potential in her personal tale, it wasn't sufficiently developed to establish a meaningful connection.

Rik Chatterjee was my favorite among the supporting cast. He brings energy every time he appears on screen and performs his role effortlessly. Other supporting actors were less notable, although they did a decent job overall.

The film's plot is my primary criticism. Tempo is intermittent and some parts are disconnected. I recently discovered that Anik Dutta was sick while filming and much of the movie scenes were shot by the cinematographer which could be a reason why, some parts just don't seem to flow well enough.

The climax, while entertaining, is obvious.It never provides the exciting payoff that a mystery movie typically promises, but it does end on a warm and gratifying note.

Joto Kando Kolkatatei is a fun, lighthearted family film all in all, especially around the holidays. While it may not be one of the best Bengali mystery films, it still manages to deliver a decent amount of nostalgia, amazing graphics and performances, if you go in expecting a trip down memory lane, rather than a thrilling mystery movie, you'll most likely enjoy it.
