Tourist In My Home Town #8 - Modern Ages And Shopping Spree

Have you ever viewed your hometown through the eyes of a tourist? When immersed in daily routines, it's challenging to adopt an explorer's mindset as familiar landmarks lose their allure when they've been part of your backdrop since childhood.

Back in 2011, I departed from Romania, returning each summer for brief visits. These stays were often consumed by administrative tasks and family commitments, leaving little room for leisurely exploration.

Buzău is a city where the past and present collide in the most fascinating way. From historic streets and local traditions to bustling everyday life, Buzău has it all.

With the new shopping mall, you can stroll through history in the morning and go on a modern shopping spree by afternoon. The palace in the town center is still the main landmark... but we went modern!

My town is the place where heritage meets contemporary vibes, where cafés, boutiques, and cultural landmarks sit side by side! If you visit... also do a little bit of retail therapy!

The biggest and most modern mall in Buzău right now is Shopping City Buzău! It's basically the city’s go-to spot when you want to shop, eat, or just “accidentally” spend money.

Originally known as Aurora Shopping Mall, it went through a serious glow-up around 2018, transforming into a much bigger, slicker space. Now sitting at nearly 24,000 square metres!

What makes it stand out is the mix of international brands, local shops, and plenty of distractions all under one roof. After the upgrade, a wave of new stores arrived!

The food court is a whole vibe on its own, packed with fast food, coffee spots and restaurants! This is perfect for a “quick bite” that somehow turns into two hours.

It’s where plans are made, gossip is shared, and diets are… temporarily ignored. Add in the cinema and entertainment areas, and suddenly it’s not just a mall ... it’s a full-on weekend plan.

Shopping City Buzău is where old-school Buzău meets modern life. You’ve got someone doing groceries, someone else trying on outfits they may or may not buy! It's posh!

Something else that was old and is now new? The Windmill Lake, the spring and the newly built themed museum! Is one of those quiet, local spots that feels a bit like a hidden escape from the city’s everyday buzz.

Located on the outskirts of Buzău, the lake was originally created for practical reasons! It was mainly water management and irrigation... but over time it’s become a place where people go to unwind!

It has a more laid-back, almost rustic charm. You’ll find locals coming here for walks, or just a bit of quiet thinking time, especially in the early morning or around sunset when the light hits the water just right.

There aren’t loads of commercial developments around it, which is actually part of its appeal. It feels natural, open, and a little untouched... the kind of place where you can slow down!

The cultural park in Buzău is one of those places where history, nature, and modern design blend together effortlessly... and it has a museum-like element attached!

Opened in 2021, the park was built around the historic "Iazul Morilor" water channel, which dates back to 1525 and played a key role in the city’s development for centuries.

Today, the area has been transformed into a modern cultural space, with lakes, walking paths, green areas, and a beautifully reconstructed water mill at its centre.

That mill is where things get especially interesting. Instead of a classic museum filled with glass cases and long descriptions, it offers a more relaxed and interactive experience.

You’ll find exhibition spaces that explore the history of the area, alongside a literary café and rooms that host art exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events.

Rather than feeling like a formal museum, the whole space works as a living cultural hub! One day you might be exploring local history, the next you could stumble into an art show or a community event!

Let me tell you again about the Heroes Boulevard, or "Calea Eroilor" as we say it in plain Romanian language. This street is an open-air journey through the town's history.

Following its renovation around 2018, walking along Calea Eroilor feels like moving through a timeline... with large outdoor photo panels and displays guiding you through key moments in Buzău's past.

These installations highlight powerful chapters of history, particularly from the World Wars, honoring the heroes who fought and shaping a deeper understanding of the region.

The street’s meaning is closely tied to the nearby Heroes’ Cemetery, one of the most significant in Romania. Even its name stands as a tribute to the thousands of soldiers laid to rest there, turning the entire area into a space of remembrance, not just movement.

Clean walkways, green spaces, and bike paths create a welcoming environment, while history is thoughtfully woven into the surroundings. Strolling down doesn’t feel like walking along an ordinary street!

In the hills of Buzău County, history is buried not just in stone but in gold and faith! Read the other articles about my city, and maybe you will visit me one day!
