A tale of necessity

Sometimes it is better to tell the lies to save yourself from getting into trouble because some truths can be too bitter to accept, or let me just say some truths are better not to be told.

A lie is a lie, whether it is big or small. When someone lies about something, it is either because they are saving the person they are lying to or saving themselves from getting caught, and that is the main reason why people lie.

I have been told different lies, but then I will be sharing the one I told someone to save myself. I can’t say that I haven’t lied before because that would be another big lie as well, so yeah, I have lied countless times before, and that is because I needed to save myself from getting into trouble, and some lies worked while some didn’t.

It happened some years back when I was in the university. I finished gathering my information for my project, and when it was time to take it to my project supervisor, that was when I started having issues that I never had ever since I started the course.

I got to his office, and he said he wanted to go out with me. At first I thought he was joking, but he made it clear to me that if I didn’t go out with him, I wasn’t going to graduate because he wouldn’t approve my project.

Meanwhile, it was a group project, and we were six in the group. Everyone in the group started begging me to accept him for the time being, but I was in a serious relationship, and I can’t throw that away as well.

I went back home and thought it through, but the truth is that I can’t cheat on my boyfriend, so I decided to cook up a lie for my project supervisor. My sister and I went to the market to get a fake wedding ring. That was the deepest and biggest lie I have ever told, but I didn’t have a choice because I needed to save myself and also graduate as well.

I got to school with my fake wedding ring on my finger, and immediately my project group saw me; they came to beg me again so that we all could graduate, but I can’t sell myself out. But I pretended that I had heard, so I went to my project supervisor’s office as if I wanted to agree to his proposal.

On getting there, he sighted the ring on my finger, and he was surprised, so he asked, “Were you married before, or is this a fake ring?”

I smiled and then replied to him with confidence so that he wouldn’t know I was lying, “The wedding plan was going on since last month, and last week was my wedding, and that was why I couldn’t agree to date you, and now I am a married woman.”

At first he didn’t buy the lies, but I made it clear to him with proof of my junior sister’s wedding pictures, where she covered her face, and that was how he let me and my group go without any stress.

Ever since then, some of my colleagues thought I got married truly, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell them that it was all lies since I didn’t want the man to come back at me, so I just maintained being a fake married woman till I defended my project and then graduated. That was my biggest lie ever because it involved many people knowing that I was married then, which I was not, but I had to save my dignity at all costs.
