The Friends NYSC Gave Me

I noticed that ladies choose to make friends for several reasons.

As I saw many beautiful ladies, inchoate ideas began to form in my mind. A brief moment of chaos happened in my heart, and I found it really hard to choose a female friend.

So, I saw a fair beautiful girl who looked Yoruba. I said to myself, let me make friends with her. I greeted her, and for a while we spoke. Then I asked about her well-being. Afterwards, we were about to exchange contacts, and that was when it went wrong.

“For what?” she asked.

I froze.

I just wanted to make a friend in this huge NYSC camp, and I sincerely thought that I was not intending to date her. I was simply interested in having female friends.

I did not say anything, and that was how I slowly retracted and walked away from her sight. The signals from the beginning of the conversation made me realize that I had gone too far; she probably did not want me from the start. Facial expressions said it all, and I was forcing my way through.

I do not think I needed any help to see clearly that she was not interested in me.

For the first four days, I stayed close to many male friends until I met Tolu and Priscilla. They were kind and funny. I became Priscilla’s power-bank plug. She was different and free. She had a pure heart and always expressed herself so well.

She was also a girl who disliked stressful activities. During one conversation, Priscilla told me that Tolu was into me. I burst into laughter. Truly, I kind of liked her, but I knew we could only be friends. Because of mh previous experience in camp, I did not even dare to collect their contacts immediately. In fact, I collected Priscilla’s contact only after meeting her again and again over several days.

Later, a male friend of mine said he also wanted to be friends with tolu, and that was how I went to ask for her contact.

Clearly, she objected at first. But because it was me, she eventually agreed.

We chatted all through the night of our meeting. I shared my plans with her, and she realized it was going to be a long journey. She gave me a series of advice and encouraged me to follow my dreams.

She was a great lady. My eyes were always on her whenever she participated in the match-past on the parade ground.

I used to call her “my commander,” and she would always say, “Don’t call me that.” During one of our online conversations, I encouraged her to follow her heart and become the best version of herself, because life is too short to waste time. She thanked me, and I also commended her whenever she won several prizes.

Priscilla was not just a friend; she was an angel. There was a day when I felt emotionally and spiritually down. That day, I messaged her and asked about her well-being and safety. She said she was fine, but she kept asking about me.

It was as if she knew I was having a bad day, even though I never told her.

On the final day, we were about to depart, and we took pictures together. I told her how uncertain I felt about my future. Then she sent me a trailer-load of messages. I was not just motivated; I was deeply encouraged. In fact, she was probably stronger than I was when it came to fighting through life.

I miss you all — the genuine female friends NYSC gave me.
