First and foremost, not all criminals are truly criminals; some are victims of circumstance. Infact, who says criminals are not citizens of their country?
Hmm! Committing an offense or going to prison does not erase their legal status as a national.
Africa is evolving, and we can now see criminals going to school, completing their education, and much more. I love the fact that being convicted doesn't mean that one cannot accomplish great things in life.
I know that threre are levels to criminality.
I think criminals who have not committed grave offenses should not be deprived of their basic rights. Though in an egalitarian society, we have the right to freedom of movement and expression. I also agree that imprisonment has confined criminals to the walls of the prison yard.
Some criminals have committed minor offenses, such as disobeying traffic rules or breaking government preventive regulations. However, others have sent people to the great beyond with no justifiable reason.
Now, would one say that those who have committed minor offenses—possibly by mistake—should be left to perish through starvation? This shows that we are not so different from the criminals.
What about healthcare? I know that in some parts of Africa, healthcare is already a challenge, not to mention other social amenities. Criminals may assume that healthcare will not be provided, but I want us all to remember that they are citizens too. They also deserve to be taken care of.
I have heard that some prison yards in Nigeria have schools and many other facilities. In fact, some even have universities where inmates can learn and continue pursuing their life dreams.
Oh, what about those heartless criminals whose hearts have become so hardened that they refuse to change? Hmm… they are human too. However, I would say that they should be punished in such a way that they truly regret their actions. As common Nigerian movies would put it, they should be subjected to hard labor.
Finally, there are international and national laws that would not permit such extreme measures. In many small prisons, families still have the opportunity to bring food to their relatives after having a taste of it themselves. This is a way of ensuring that the food is safe.
