I didn't really get "online" until the early 1990s with some local BBSes. I had a blast doing it though.
Bulletin boards were great. Did you ever come across Fidonet?
Yeah, it seemed like most bulletin boards were carrying various FidoNET conferences at the time. It wasn't much later that I started using Usenet via my university internet connection. Some bulletin boards gated usenet too but that was less common.
Which university did you go to? I can always remember playing with the networks at our college and running a multiplayer game on it, that a bunch of us developed without anyone knowing about it
