The book Burden of Service happens to be one of the books I have read repeatedly. I got this book four years ago. My attention was drawn to the book by its title. When I got hold of the book, and I saw the author's name, I quickly decided to buy it. I love reading nonfiction materials, especially those written by an author who has occupied one office or the other. I always want to read about their experiences and challenges while in such an office. Be now, I never knew who Mohammed Bello Adoke was until I read this book. I will try my best to summarise this interesting book so my write-up will not be too long.

Mohammed Bello Adoke is a former Nigerian Attorney General and Minister of Justice from 2010 to 2015. He tells his story in a 263-page book titled “Burden of Service”. The book is very captivating, such that the author tells his side of the story on some of the conflicting events that happened during his time as a public office holder. The book’s content is divided into five categories; the first, he called “the call of destiny,” where he talked about his childhood experiences as a boy growing up in a polygamous home, he shared his story on how he rose from grass to grace. He mentioned how poor his parents were, such that no one could have thought that he could rise to such an elevated position in the country. He shared how he took his education seriously and how he was appointed by the former president of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The part two of the book, the author extensively talked about the oil prospecting license 245, which is also known as OPL 245. It was a deal that the federal government of Nigeria had with Malabu Oil and Gas Limited in 2001 over the ownership and development of an oil well. The company demanded a refund after the federal government revoked the title deed. The process was full of controversies and accusations, and some people were labelled as thieves and all of that. It was already the Nigerian media that Mohammed Bello Adoke was alleged to have stolen $800 million from the deal. Hence, he told the entire story of what happened and the role he played in the deal, attempting to clear his name from the allegations levelled against him.

In part three, the author wrote about the events that led up to the 2015 general election. The election that which the sitting president was oust out of office and how the president conceded the election by calling the presidential candidate Muhamed Buhari to congratulate him.
In chapters four and five, the author wrote about some of the political happenings in the country. It is so important to note how interesting and educational this information is to Nigerians and the rest of the world. Some of which are the Halliburton scandal, the Bakassi handover controversy, and the recovery of Abacha’s loot. In all of these, the author tells his side of the story and the roles he played. As a teacher, I am well-equipped with vital information to teach others.

In conclusion, we can learn some important lessons from the book. One of which is that the service is full of burden, while others may see the grandeur, few see the challenges. There is more to service than glitter. The author adopts a story model to pass his message. I would recommend this book to the general public, the students, social analysts and commentators, and those who love knowledge and history.

El libro Burden of Service resulta ser uno de los libros que he leído repetidamente. Conseguí este libro hace cuatro años. Me llamó la atención por el título. Cuando tuve el libro en mis manos y vi el nombre del autor, rápidamente decidí comprarlo. Me encanta leer obras de no ficción, especialmente las escritas por un autor que ha ocupado un cargo u otro. Siempre me apetece leer sobre sus experiencias y retos mientras ocupó tal cargo. Hasta ahora, no sabía quién era Mohammed Bello Adoke hasta que leí este libro. Intentaré resumir este interesante libro lo mejor que pueda para no alargarme demasiado.
Mohammed Bello Adoke fue fiscal general de Nigeria y ministro de Justicia entre 2010 y 2015. Cuenta su historia en un libro de 263 páginas titulado «Burden of Service». El libro es muy cautivador, ya que el autor cuenta su versión de la historia sobre algunos de los conflictivos sucesos acaecidos durante su etapa como titular de un cargo público. El contenido del libro se divide en cinco categorías; la primera, que él llama «la llamada del destino», en la que habla de sus experiencias infantiles como niño que creció en un hogar polígamo, comparte su historia sobre cómo se elevó de la hierba a la gracia. Mencionó lo pobres que eran sus padres, de modo que nadie podría haber pensado que él podría llegar a una posición tan elevada en el país. Contó cómo se tomó en serio su educación y cómo fue nombrado por el ex presidente de Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

En la segunda parte del libro, el autor habla extensamente de la licencia de prospección petrolífera 245, también conocida como OPL 245. Fue un acuerdo que el gobierno federal de Nigeria mantuvo con Malabu Oil and Gas Limited en 2001 sobre la propiedad y explotación de un pozo petrolífero. En la tercera parte, el autor escribió sobre los acontecimientos que condujeron a las elecciones generales de 2015. Las elecciones en las que el presidente en funciones fue destituido y cómo el presidente concedió las elecciones llamando al candidato presidencial Muhamed Buhari para felicitarle.

En los capítulos cuatro y cinco, el autor escribió sobre algunos de los acontecimientos políticos del país. Cabe destacar lo interesante y educativa que resulta esta información para los nigerianos y el resto del mundo. Algunos de ellos son el escándalo Halliburton, la polémica sobre la entrega de Bakassi y la recuperación del botín de Abacha. En todos ellos, el autor cuenta su versión de la historia y los papeles que desempeñó. Como profesor, estoy bien equipado con información vital para enseñar a otros.

En conclusión, podemos aprender algunas lecciones importantes del libro. Una de ellas es que el servicio está lleno de cargas, mientras que otros pueden ver la grandeza, pocos ven los retos. El servicio es mucho más que brillo. El autor adopta un modelo de relato para transmitir su mensaje. Recomendaría este libro al público en general, a los estudiantes, a los analistas y comentaristas sociales y a los amantes del conocimiento y la historia.
