I came to it through the back door, first seduced by the film, by that suffocating atmosphere and the inquisitive gaze of Alice Gould. The impact was so profound that I needed more, I needed the written word, the origin of everything, and what a good decision I made.

The novel, published in 1979 by Torcuato Luca de Tena, presents us with Alice Gould, a woman of dazzling intelligence who enters a mental sanatorium convinced she is a private detective on a secret mission, but her doctor's letter reveals a very different version, since Alice suffers from paranoia that leads her to want to attack her own husband. Luca de Tena's brilliance is making the reader, like the psychiatrists at the center, never truly know where madness ends and reality begins.

Reading the book after watching the film was an enriching and different experience. The film is an excellent thriller, but the book is a treatise on sanity and empathy. Luca de Tena's prose allows you to enter Alice's mind with an intimacy that images cannot capture. I felt her confusion, her arrogance, and at times her despair. The question that beats at the heart of the novel, whether she is crazy or a victim of a conspiracy, kept me on tenterhooks until the last page, doubting over and over again, changing my mind like a pendulum.

Este libro del que hoy hablaré es de esos libros que resuenan en tu cabeza mucho después de haberlos cerrado, y Los renglones torcidos de Dios es de esos. Llegué a él por la puerta de atrás, seducida primero por la película, por esa atmósfera asfixiante y la mirada inquisitiva de Alice Gould. El impacto fue tan profundo que necesitaba más, necesitaba la palabra escrita, el origen de todo, y qué bien hice.

La novela, publicada en 1979 por Torcuato Luca de Tena, nos presenta a Alice Gould, una mujer de inteligencia deslumbrante que ingresa en un sanatorio mental convencida de ser una detective privada en una misión secreta, pero la carta de su médico desvela una versión muy distinta, pues Alice sufre una paranoia que la lleva a querer atentar contra su propio marido. La genialidad de Luca de Tena es hacer que el lector, como los psiquiatras del centro, no sepa nunca a ciencia cierta dónde termina la locura y empieza la realidad.

Lo que hace especial esta lectura, y lo que convierte el libro en un clásico de la narrativa española, es precisamente esa ambigüedad. Me di cuenta desde el principio de que no estaba ante un simple thriller psicológico, pues esta novela es un viaje a los límites de la percepción humana. Me fascinó descubrir que el propio autor, para documentarse, se internó durante dieciocho días en una institución psiquiátrica, y ese realismo se nota en cada página, en la descripción de los otros pacientes, esos "renglones torcidos de Dios", que no son meros secundarios, sino almas complejas que humanizan la historia.

Leer el libro después de ver la película fue una experiencia enriquecedora y diferente. La película es un excelente thriller, pero el libro es un tratado sobre la cordura y la empatía. La prosa de Luca de Tena te permite adentrarte en la mente de Alice con una intimidad que la imagen no puede capturar. Sentí su confusión, su arrogancia y, a ratos, su desesperación. La pregunta que late en el corazón de la novela, de si está loca o es víctima de una conspiración, me mantuvo en vilo hasta la última página, dudando una y otra vez, cambiando de opinión como un péndulo.

En definitiva, Los renglones torcidos de Dios es una obra que va mucho más allá del entretenimiento y es una reflexión poderosa sobre cómo definimos la locura y, sobre todo, sobre la fragilidad de la línea que separa la razón del delirio.

Para mí, que llegué buscando respuestas a mi fascinación por la película, el libro me devolvió preguntas mucho más interesantes.
