Last night, while watching my daughter from the kitchen window, I felt time fold in on itself. She, having just turned thirteen, was in the yard, kneeling on the flagstones that the afternoon sun had warmed, and between her fingers, a tiny lizard, one of those garden ones that seem made of jade and patience, trembled without fear. My Geraldine was talking to it, I do not know what she said, but she released it with the same tenderness with which she had caught it, and watched it run toward the adenium pot as if she had given it permission.

And then, like a flash of lightning, the verses of Josรฉ Martรญ came to me, those I used to recite in school:
"A mischievous boy went hunting butterflies,
the rascal caught them, gave them a kiss,
and then released them among the roses."
I always thought that poem was just a pretty image, a metaphor for childhood that plays without malice, but seeing my daughter do exactly that, yet with lizards instead of butterflies, made me understand something that Martรญ knew and that I had forgotten: there is a tenderness in the capture that is not possession, but encounter.

She does not hurt them, but I have seen other children catch bugs with jars, with sticks, with the cruel clumsiness of those who do not measure their strength. She takes them with the tips of her fingers, like someone lifting a feather, and holds them offering her human warmth as if it were just another branch. She speaks to them in a low voice, a whisper that barely reaches my ears, and then she lets them go, she does not hold them back or collect them.

I wonder where she got that skill. Perhaps from all those animal documentaries she has watched, or perhaps from that sensitivity that arises on its own, or maybe it is an echo of that little girl I used to be, running after the yellow butterflies.

Now I see that my Geraldine repeats that gesture but with a consciousness that I did not have. She knows that the lizard is not hers, and the kiss she does not give it she translates into a fixed gaze, a slow breath, that moment of silence between capture and release.

Yesterday afternoon when she came into the house with dirty hands and a smile too big for her face, I said: "Again with the lizards?" And she, with that seriousness of teenagers who discover the world, replied: "Miji, they know me and it seems they do not run when they see me."
Definitely in that Cuban patio, my daughter was weaving her own version of Martรญ's verse. She does not hunt butterflies but she hunts lizards, gives them her full attention and releases them, not among the geraniums and rosemary that we planted together.

That is her national hero, her personal Martรญ. And I can only give thanks that the world still has children like my Geraldine, who catch with the gentleness of those who know that everything taken with respect stays forever in the soul.

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL

Me pregunto de dรณnde sacรณ esa habilidad.
