The dance of the caudex on my Monday of rebirth [Eng/Esp]

Some Mondays taste like Mondays, and some Mondays taste like life, and this one, in particular, has tasted like damp earth and fresh roots. Today, at last, I have faced a debt I had been carrying since January: the exposure of the caudex of my adenium. It was not an obligation, but a promise I made to myself, something like a ritual that my soul as a neurologist and gardener needed to celebrate.

I had been putting it off for months, and the excuse was always the same: the hospital, the shifts, the emergencies that cannot wait. But these days, the calendar has given me a respite, and I decided it was time. Several adeniums are waiting their turn, like patients in a long queue, but today it was the first one's turn, the one that started this passion, and I went for it with all my strength, with the same intensity with which I approach a complex clinical case.

The process began with the removal of the decorative gravel, that layer of small stones that, although beautiful, hid what truly mattered. With surgical patience, I moved them aside, feeling each small stone between my fingers. Then came the moment to free the roots from their prison of soil. It was like unearthing a secret, and there they were: the roots, grown, tangled, wild, telling me in their mute language everything they had done during these months of waiting.

I washed them carefully, as if they were delicate nerve fibers, and the water carried away the soil, revealing that underground geography that fascinates me so much. Then, with scissors in hand, I began to trim, not without some fear, because every cut is an irreversible decision. Removing what hinders so that the essential can flourish. I cut thin roots, some too long, others that twisted meaninglessly, always seeking that balance between aesthetics and the health of the caudex.

Preparing the substrate was another act of love: a well-drained mixture, sandy, nutritious but without excess. The perfect texture for this new home to welcome the adenium in its new position. And when I placed it, higher up, proudly displaying that caudex that had previously remained hidden, I felt an emotion difficult to explain. It was like seeing a patient get up after a successful surgery.

I will leave it for a few days, perhaps weeks, in a quiet corner, with indirect light and no water, so that it can heal its wounds. Then will come the radical pruning of its crown, the next step in this choreography of growth. But today, while my hands still smell of earth and sap, I only want to stay a little longer looking at it, because this is not just gardening; it is the certainty that plants also need time, attention, and a little pain to be reborn stronger.

This Monday, I have reconnected with a part of myself that the noise of the hospital sometimes silences. The neurologist who heals brains is also the woman who heals roots, and in that double identity I find my balance and am reborn.

Pero estos dรญas, el calendario me ha regalado un respiro, y he decidido que era el momento.
