ENGLISH VERSION

The sting that defines me

A few days ago, in one of those stolen moments between ward rounds and consultations, I sat down with a book that had nothing to do with medicine. It was a collection of essays, and among its pages I found these words by Virgilio Lรณpez Lemus:
"When its defensive sting pierces, it dies, because the bee succumbs when it causes pain; it is a body of goodness, an insect of wonder, it has divine gifts, nature rewards it with the sweetest flavor, with the finest pollen, with the most closed and at the same time most open organization, the most tyrannical beauty..."
I read that phrase once, twice, three times, and something stirred in my chest. It was not just beautiful literature; it was a mirror, because I too am a body of goodness, and so are all those who have chosen to dedicate their lives to relieving others' pain.

The biology of the bee is brutal and perfect: its sting has barbs that anchor into the attacker's skin, and when it flies away to free itself, it tears and dies. It is not an evolutionary flaw; it is a statement of principle: its defense is not an attack, it is an act of love toward the hive, and it cannot cause harm without perishing. Nature designed it so that its essence is incompatible with evil.
And I, as a Cuban female physician, have felt that same incompatibility in my bones. I was not born to cause pain, although my profession sometimes has to cause it; every act I perform is permeated by a deeper intention, which is to alleviate, to heal, to sustain. My sting is not a weapon but a tool of care, and like the bee, I know that if I ever wield my power to deliberately harm, something in me breaks forever.

Lรณpez Lemus says that nature rewards the bee with three gifts: the sweetest flavor, the finest pollen, the most closed and at the same time most open organization. When I read it with my physician's eyes, the sweetest flavor is gratitude in the form of that look from a patient who breathes deeply again, and that hand that squeezes yours without words, with that "thank you, doctor" that weighs more than any title.
The finest pollen is trust: every time someone bares themselves before you, they are handing you their vulnerability, that sacred pollen, and if you handle it clumsily, you not only fail as a professional, you fail as a human being.

The most closed and open organization is our community: Cuban physicians are a hive that is closed in our protocols and demanding training, but open to those who arrive with nothing and only have faith. That dual condition is our tyrannical beauty, which demands more from us than any other profession asks.
I have seen colleagues burn out and lose their smile, harden their gaze, become mechanical, and I understood then that it is not exhaustion that breaks them, but the disconnection from their essence. When you practice medicine as a routine, when you treat symptoms and not people, you are driving a sting you should not have, and although your body remains alive, your calling dies. Like bees, we succumb when we cause pain, because we are not made for that.
In the photos that accompany this post, I am not a doctor in a white coat, but an ordinary woman, in casual clothes, with a book in my hands, reading in my free time, because I want you to see that this reflection does not come from the consultation room, but from who I am when no one is watching, and I choose to spend my spare time on essays that remind me why I chose this.

Being a Cuban female physician means understanding that every day I can choose: to be a bee that stings on instinct, or to be a bee that gives itself completely until the end. I have decided that, if I must die, let it be having given all the pollen I carry within, without reservations and without regrets.
