Chronicle of a Train Journey (Toward Myself)

It was 2 in the morning at the Camagรผey railway station, and the air smelled of coffee from a thermos, of cardboard suitcases, and of that weariness that precedes long journeys. I am a woman, and I was alone with my thoughts when I had just boarded a train that would not reach Matanzas until after 3 in the afternoon. Thirteen hours, more than halfway around the island, and anyone would say it was torture, but I, now I know it, needed exactly that.

At first, the rattling was annoying, and the worn fabric seats did not invite sleep, as the carriage moved with that unpredictable cadence of Cuban rails. I closed my eyes, but my brain would not shut off; on the contrary, as if the noise of the train were turning off the noise of the world, my thoughts began to emerge from the hiding places where I had tucked them. When was the last time I had sat down to think without a phone in my hand? When was the last time I allowed myself to simply be?

Hours passed, and around 5 a.m., as the train crossed the savannas of Florida, that Camagรผey municipality that seems frozen in time, I could see the moon reflected in the puddles, and there, in that half-light, what I call "the first cleaning" occurred: I began to take out things like small worries I had disguised as urgent, people to whom I gave energy that they did not return, goals that were not mine but that someone had sold me as success.

At 7 in the morning, the sun was appearing and the landscape was changing as we went through the province of Ciego de รvila, and the light gilded the sugarcane fields; it was then that I felt clarity. It was not a stroke of inspiration, but a slow ordering, like someone placing dominoes on a table, and then I remembered real priorities: my emotional health, that project I left half done, and the pending call to that friend who always understands me.

The heat began to intensify after 10 a.m., and in the train's own lack of hurry lies the greatest lesson: when you step out of your comfort zone and when the air conditioning of routine disappears, you see everything more clearly. That way you see that many of your anxieties were just background noise, that you could let go of what weighed you down without the world ending, and above all, that you had been neglecting yourself.

The thing is, you get used to functioning on autopilot: getting up, solving problems, putting out fires, complying, keeping quiet, and one day you realize that you have gone months without asking yourself what you need. That train, with its stubbornly Cuban slowness, forced me to ask myself that question.

I arrived in Matanzas after 3 in the afternoon, got off with wrinkled clothes, messy hair, and eyes full of something I can only call certainty. For thirteen hours I did nothing "productive" by the standards of this world, I just thought, and in that simple act, so revolutionary in these times, my life was put in order more than with any agenda or to-do list.

Today I want to tell you, from this community of growth, to look for your own thirteen hours on a train. It does not have to be a real journey; it can be an afternoon without screens, a long walk, a night alone. But we need those moments of active pause, of disordered thought that slowly falls into place.

That train gave me back my priorities, took away the noise, and reminded me that to find the path, you first have to get lost in a carriage in the early morning.

๐Ÿš†โœจ๐ŸŒ„
