Elinor Glyn earned an important place in my adolescent readings, and after immersing myself in Alcione and Man and Woman, I came to Blind Love with a certain familiarity, already knowing her obsessions: love as an overwhelming and dangerous force that upends everything. Glyn has a hypnotic ability that made her the queen of scandalous romance in the early twentieth century.

The novel presents from the very beginning a premise that Glyn handles with mastery. Little Vanessa, described as exquisitely beautiful and delicate as a Tanagra figurine, marries Count Hubert de St. Austel almost impulsively, without either of them having given much thought to the decision, but what seems like a fairy tale is soon overshadowed by the constant presence of Alicia de Lincolnwood, a British lady of high society, described as a fascinating butterfly who comes to burn her wings in the bonfire of her uncontrollable love.

The real conflict is not between Vanessa and Alicia, but between innocence and experience, between domesticated love and the passion that devours everything. Thus Count Hubert is torn between two women who represent two ways of understanding love, and that indecision is what gives the novel its title. It is about the blindness that clouds judgment when the heart is allowed to take over.

What fascinates me most about Glyn is her ability to construct complex female characters. Vanessa is not a passive victim and is the master of her own decisions, even if these lead her down tortuous paths. The author infuses her pages with an authenticity that transcends mere melodrama, and when she writes about illicit loves, she is not speculating because she knows what she is talking about.

The truth is that Blind Love has felt less vibrant to me than Alcione, and perhaps that is because the dynamic between the characters follows a pattern I already recognize: the woman who defies norms, the love that can do everything and destroys equally. Glyn's writing remains impeccable, with that elegant and enveloping prose that characterizes her work, but I feel that the novel does not take as many risks as its predecessors.

What it does keep intact is its power as a chronicle of a society in transformation. Through her stories, Glyn portrayed the changing role of women in the twentieth century, that timid but real emancipation that she herself embodied by becoming an independent writer and entrepreneur of her own image. In this sense, Blind Love is as valuable a historical document as any sociological treatise.

In short, Blind Love is a work I would recommend to anyone wanting to enter the Glyn universe, but perhaps not the most memorable for those who already know her work. Love, Glyn tells us, can blind us, but it can also teach us to see beyond the obvious.

Elinor Glyn se ganó un lugar importante en mis lecturas de adolescencia y después de sumergirme en Alcione y Hombre y mujer, llegué a Ceguera de amor con cierta familiaridad, conociendo ya sus obsesiones: el amor como una fuerza arrolladora y peligrosa que todo lo trastoca. Glyn tiene una capacidad hipnótica que la convirtió en la reina del romance escandaloso de principios del siglo XX.

La novela plantea desde el principio una premisa que Glyn maneja con maestría. La pequeña Vanessa, descrita como hermosísima y delicada como una figurilla de Tanagra, se casa con el conde Huberto de St. Austel de manera casi impulsiva, sin que ninguno de los dos haya meditado demasiado la decisión, pero lo que parece un cuento de hadas se ve pronto ensombrecido por la presencia constante de Alicia de Lincolnwood, una dama británica del gran mundo, descrita como una mariposa fascinadora que viene a quemar sus alas en la hoguera de su amor incontenible.

El verdadero conflicto no es entre Vanessa y Alicia, sino entre el amor domesticado y la pasión que todo lo devora. Así, el conde Huberto se debate entre dos mujeres que representan dos formas de entender el amor, y esa indecisión es la que da título a la novela. Se trata de la ceguera que nubla el juicio cuando el corazón se deja llevar.

Lo que más me fascina de Glyn es su habilidad para construir personajes femeninos complejos. Vanessa no es una víctima pasiva y es dueña de sus decisiones, aunque estas la lleven por caminos tortuosos. La autora infunde a sus páginas una autenticidad que trasciende el mero folletín, y cuando escribe sobre amores ilícitos, no especula porque sabe de lo que habla.

La realidad es que Ceguera de amor me ha resultado menos vibrante que Alcione, y sea tal vez porque la dinámica entre los personajes sigue un patrón que ya reconozco: la mujer que desafía las normas, el amor que todo lo puede y lo destruye a partes iguales. La pluma de Glyn sigue siendo impecable, con esa prosa elegante y envolvente que caracteriza su obra, pero siento que la novela no arriesga tanto como sus predecesoras.

Lo que sí mantiene intacto es su poder como cronista de una sociedad en transformación. Por eso, a través de sus historias, Glyn retrató el cambio de rol de la mujer en el siglo XX, esa emancipación tímida pero real que ella misma encarnó al convertirse en una escritora independiente y empresaria de su propia imagen. En este sentido, Ceguera de amor es un documento histórico tan valioso como cualquier tratado sociológico.

En definitiva, Ceguera de amor es una obra que recomendaría a quien quiera iniciarse en el universo Glyn, pero quizás no la más memorable para quien ya conoce su obra. El amor, nos dice Glyn, puede cegarnos, pero también enseñarnos a ver más allá de lo evidente.
