There is something endearingly human in Shakespeare's "lesser" plays because while Hamlet and Macbeth look down at us from their pedestals of tragic gravity, The Two Gentlemen of Verona approaches with a smile, like that friend who trips upon entering the party but ends up stealing the show. And it certainly deserves to be rescued from the obscurity in which we sometimes confine it.
I confess that I came to this comedy with a certain skepticism. It had in its favor that it was the first play signed by the Bard, but critics have not been especially benevolent with it. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a chance, and what I found was an early laboratory of everything that would make Shakespeare great: youthful love, friendship put to the test, disguise as a catalyst for truths, and of course, that very English humor that mixes the sophisticated with the grotesque.

The plot is simple: two friends, Valentine and Proteus, see their romantic paths become entangled when both love Silvia, the daughter of the Duke of Milan. Valentine flees with her, Proteus pursues them, and along the way he encounters his own love, Julia. It may seem like a Renaissance soap opera, but Shakespeare, even in his early efforts, knew that theater does not need complex plots but soul.
What fascinates me about this play is its imperfection, with that ending where Proteus offers Julia to Valentine as if she were an object, unsettling our modern sensibilities. Perhaps therein lies its genius: even in its stumbles, it forces us to engage in dialogue with the work, to question it, to feel it alive.

Definitely this play should not be dismissed, because although it is not A Midsummer Night's Dream, nor Much Ado About Nothing, it is the preliminary sketch, the dress rehearsal where Shakespeare was testing colors and textures. Reading it today is like peeking into the genius's workshop, where the sketches of characters that would later become great are on display, along with the themes that would obsess the playwright throughout his life.
I recommend it without reservations to anyone who wants to understand Shakespeare from his foundations, but also to anyone looking for an afternoon of light theater, with romantic entanglements, disguises, and a happy ending. Do not seek here the philosophical depth of King Lear; seek instead the joy of a young author discovering his craft while getting excited about his own creations and laughing at love's absurdities.

This play has that something that only first works have: the freshness of one who does not yet fully know what he is doing and, precisely for that reason, dares to do everything.

VERSIรN EN ESPAรOL
