For a fantasy anime, I didn't really like it, to be honest. And it's not because it's actually "dark fantasy", but quite the opposite. Personally, I think this type of fantasy is one of the best when it comes to finding interesting and different stories to watch. Most of them offer compelling plots that challenge the typical clichés of current generic fantasy anime. But in the case of Übel Blatt, I think it lacked much of what hooked me in the beginning. Since it's a story of revenge and all that, you'd expect action and unexpected plot twists in every episode.

But in this anime, let's say that there was no lack of action or plot twists, but there was a lack of development or better direction in terms of the events that took place. Added to this, there are also certain details in its adaptation and animation that I didn't like at all, to be honest. I'm not usually very demanding when it comes to watching fantasy anime. I almost always try to adapt to the limitations of each work in terms of audiovisuals, production, narrative, story, and characters. As I've told you many times, most are generic, so I don't expect much from them.

Para ser de fantasía, es un anime que no me terminó de gustar, la verdad. Y no es por el hecho de que sea en realidad ‘fantasía oscura’, sino todo lo contrario. Personalmente pienso que este tipo de fantasías es de lo mejor al momento de encontrar historias interesantes y diferentes para ver. La mayoría nos ofrecen tramas llamativas que desafían los típicos clichés de animes de fantasía genéricos actuales. Pero en el caso world Übel Blatt** considero que le faltó mucho de eso que llegó a engancharme en un principio. Y es que al tratarse de una historia de venganza y todo eso, uno esperaría acción y giros de trama inesperados en cada episodio.

Pero en este anime digamos que no faltó ni la acción ni los giros de trama, pero sí faltó un poco de desarrollo o una mejor dirección en cuanto a los acontecimientos ocurridos. Sumado a esto, también hay ciertos detalles en su adaptación y animación que no me gustaron para nada, la verdad. Normalmente no soy muy exigente al momento de ver un anime de fantasía. Casi siempre intento adaptarme a las limitaciones que ofrece cada obra en cuanto a lo audiovisual, producción, narrativa, historia y personajes. Como les dije muchas veces, la mayoría son genéricas, así que no espero casi nada de ellas.

However, when I watched Übel Blatt, I noticed that the work sought to tell us something a little different from what is normal in this fantasy genre. I'm not going to say that it's a novelty, since revenge stories have existed in the vast world anime for decades, but what this adaptation it's to offer us is something that could have been better achieved with a different direction. I don't want to talk about the adaptation itself, since I've never read the manga. Nor do I want to be too harsh on this work, since, at various points, it manages to fulfill its objective very well.

The narrative is simple: the path of revenge. The protagonist, Köinzell (Ascheritt), is presented to us at the beginning as someone mysterious, cold, and powerful when it comes to fighting. Despite his appearance, he is very skilled and strong. His goal is to take revenge by killing those who betrayed him and his comrades with whom he fought twenty years ago to save their nation. However, this will not be easy at all, as the nation views these seven targets as their current heroes and saviors. Getting close to them and killing them will not be easy, especially since he will have to make enemies of the entire kingdom.

En cambio, al momento de ver Übel Blatt noté que la obra buscaba contarnos algo un tanto diferente a lo normal en este género de la fantasía. Tampoco voy a decir que es una novedad ya que las historias de venganza ya existían en este enorme mundo del anime desde hace décadas atrás, pero lo que nos intentó ofrecer esta adaptación es algo que pudo haberse visto mejor con otra dirección. No quiero hablar sobre la adaptación como tal ya que no leí nunca el manga. Tampoco pienso ser tan duro con esta obra ya que, en varios momentos, logra cumplir muy bien con su objetivo.

La narrativa es simple: el camino de la venganza. El protagonista, Köinzell (Ascheritt), se nos presenta al inicio como alguien misterioso, frío y poderoso al momento de pelar. A pesar de su apariencia, es alguien muy hábil y fuerte. Su objetivo es vengarse quitándole la vida a los que lo traicionaron a él y a los demás compañeros con quienes luchó hace veinte años atrás para salvar a su nación. Sin embargo, esto no será para nada fácil ya que dicha nación mira a estos siete objetivos como sus actuales héroes y salvadores. Acercarse y acabar con ellos no será nada sencillo, sobre todo porque tendrá que enemistarse con todo el reino.

The premise is appealing, especially if you're looking for a story of revenge, cruel and dark as one would expect to see in a work like this. The protagonist fulfills his mission on several occasions, offering us raw and uncensored action scenes throughout the series. But there are also moments when he disappoints a little, as he doesn't always act as one would expect from someone with his power and thirst for revenge. However, I believe this is mainly due to the direction the anime takes in certain aspects, giving time to secondary characters who are not even worth knowing.

Don't get me wrong, I really value character development, but in the case of Übel Blatt, I feel that this is very unbalanced, as we are given almost no information about the protagonist in the first few episodes. We also know nothing about the origin of his powers or how he managed to survive, change his appearance, and stay so young for so many years. We barely know the background of his enormous hatred for heroes, but knowing that they betrayed him is more than enough. There's no need to devote so much time to each one so that we can learn their story if they're going to die in the end, right?

La premisa atrae, sobre todo si lo que buscas es una historia de venganza, cruel y oscura como uno espera ver en una obra como esta. El protagonista cumple con su cometido en varias ocasiones, ofreciéndonos escenas de acción crudas y sin censura a lo largo de la serie. Pero también hay momentos en los que decepciona un poco ya que no actúa siempre como uno esperaría de alguien con su poder y su sed de venganza. Sin embargo, considero que esto se debe mayormente a la dirección que tiene el anime en ciertos aspectos al darle su tiempo a ciertos personajes secundarios que no valen la pena conocer siquiera.

No me malentiendan, valoro mucho el desarrollo de personajes, pero en el caso de Übel Blatt siento que esto llega a desbalancear bastante al no darnos casi nada de información sobre el protagonista en sus primeros episodios. Tampoco sabemos nada sobre el origen de sus poderes o del cómo llegó a sobrevivir, cambiar de aspecto y mantenerse así de joven por tantos años. Apenas y conocemos el trasfondo del enorme odio que le tiene a los héroes, pero ya con saber que lo traicionaron es más que suficiente, tampoco hay que dedicarle tanto tiempo a cada uno para que conozcamos su historia si al final van a morir, ¿no?

On the other hand, I don't complain much about the level of cruelty and evil that can be glimpsed in each episode. This kingdom is literally plagued with injustice, abuse, extortion, and every kind of evil imaginable. We can also see this evil even in the supposed temple where, instead of worshipping the gods, they praise useless and flawed human beings such as the seven heroes. Each character is literally made to be hated from the moment they appear in the anime. The level of evil these people display is incredible.

We also have themes such as slavery, prejudice, xenophobia, and the trafficking of poor people or other races in this dark and tainted world. There are a few secondary characters who accompany the protagonist, and we may feel a little empathy for them. However, the fanservice in this anime does not help at all. As for the action, I have nothing to complain about, except for one thing that I consider key in this anime. But before I talk about that, I want to clarify that this animated adaptation is not complete, which is even worse.

Por otro lado, no me quejo mucho sobre el nivel de crueldad y maldad que se puede vislumbrar en cada episodio. Literalmente este reino está plagado de injusticias, abusos, extorsión y todo tipo de maldades que se puedan imaginar. También podemos ver dicha maldad hasta en el supuesto templo donde, en vez de venerar a los dioses, alaban a seres humanos inútiles y con muchos defectos como lo son los siete héroes. Cada personaje está hecho literalmente para que lo odies desde el instante en el que aparece en el anime. Es increíble el nivel de maldad que maneja esta gente.

También tenemos temas como la esclavitud, los prejuicios, la xenofobia y el tráfico de personas pobres o de otras razas en este mundo oscuro y manchado. Hay uno que otro personaje secundario que vemos acompañar al protagonista y que podemos llegar a sentirnos un poco empáticos con ellos. Aunque el tema del fanservice que posee este anime no ayuda en lo absoluto tampoco. En cuanto a la acción, no tengo nada de qué quejarme, solo de una cosa que considero clave en este anime. Pero antes de hablar de eso, quiero aclarar también que esta adaptación animada no está completa, lo cual es peor aún.

Sometimes, certain adaptations are left unfinished because they don't achieve the expected success when they start production. In the case of Übel Blatt, I don't know if it was a success or just another fantasy anime that was forgotten last year, but personally, I don't think we'll see a sequel anytime soon. Even so, if a second season or movie of this anime were to come out, I would watch it only to find out what happens after the end of this main season. I don't consider it to be one of the best dark fantasy anime I've seen, far from it.

But I also don't think it's so bad that it should be completely dismissed. Although if you're looking for audiovisual quality, I'm sorry to say that you're going to be quite disappointed here. The animation is the key point I mentioned earlier that needed a lot of improvement in this anime. Despite being produced by two different studios, I don't think it always lives up to the high standards it set in its first episode. Not that the first episode was the best of all, though. Where it should stand out, it doesn't do so as much as expected in the end.

Mind you, the character designs, the dark and cold color palette, the animation style, and the visual details are excellent. But in terms of fluidity and visual effects, it falls short. This happens mostly in the action scenes, which are numerous in this anime, and most of them end up with only basic effects. The same goes for the sound effects, which barely manage to grab your attention. And let's not even talk about the soundtrack, which, at times, fails to convey what the episodes are aiming for. Anyway, here's this anime that you may or may not like, depending on what you're looking for in the end.

Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 in terms of the dark fantasy, action, and drama genres.

A veces, ciertas adaptaciones quedan a medias debido a que no cumplen con el éxito esperado al momento de empezar a ser producidas. En el caso de Übel Blatt no conozco bien si fue un éxito o solo otro anime de fantasía que quedó en el olvido el año pasado, pero en lo personal no creo que veamos una continuación tan pronto. Igual, si llegara a salir alguna segunda temporada o una película de este anime la vería únicamente para saber lo qué ocurre después del final de esta temporada principal. No considero que sea de los mejores animes de fantasía oscura que haya visto ni muchísimo menos.

Pero tampoco pienso que esté tan mal como para descargarlo por completo. Aunque si lo que buscas es calidad audiovisual, lamento decirte que aquí vas a quedarte bastante decepcionado. Y es que su animación es ese punto clave que mencioné antes que le faltó mejorar muchísimo en este anime. A pesar de ser producida por dos estudios diferentes, considero que no siempre llega a cumplir con los altos estándares que tenía en su primer episodio. Aunque tampoco es que su primer episodio haya sido el mejor de todos. En donde deberían de destacarse, no lo hacen tanto como se espera al final.

Ojo, los diseños de los personajes, la paleta de colores oscuros y fríos, el estilo de animación y los detalles visuales son excelentes. Pero en cuanto a fluidez y efectos visuales falla muchísimo. Esto ocurre más que nada en las escenas de acción, las cuales son muchas en este anime y la mayoría terminan cumpliendo apenas con efectos básicos. Lo mismo ocurre con sus efectos de sonido que apenas cumplen con llamar la atención. Y no hablemos de su banda sonora que, en ciertos momentos, no termina de transmitir lo que se busca en sus episodios. En fin, aquí les dejo este anime que puede llegar a gustarte o no, todo depende de lo que busques al final.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía oscura, acción y drama.
