Three Songs by Lasso | Music & Natto (Three Tunes Tuesday Edition) [ENG/SPA]
Hello, fans of good music. As has become my habit lately, it’s already Music Tuesday (though by the time this post goes up, it’ll already be Wednesday on Hive), which means it’s time to talk about three essential, special, and unforgettable songs. This time, I’m bringing you another Latin singer-songwriter who is also of Venezuelan origin. Unlike Caramelos de Cianuro, I’m personally not a huge fan of Lasso’s songs, though that doesn’t mean I don’t like several of his singles.
Among the singles I know and remember by Lasso are the three I decided to choose to feature in this post. Lasso is known for his music, which blends Rock with Latin Pop and Romantic Ballads. His unique way of composing and singing songs with such emotional and romantic lyrics has made him a fairly famous artist in the Hispanic world. But the reason I chose the following three songs from his entire repertoire is for something much more personal.
Hola, fanáticos de la buena música. Como me he estado acostumbrando recientemente, ya estamos en martes de música (aunque a la hora de subir este post ya será miércoles en Hive), lo cual significa que toca hablar de tres canciones esenciales, especiales e inolvidables. Esta vez les traigo a otro cantautor Latino que también es de origen Venezolano. A diferencia de Caramelos de Cianuro, personalmente no soy muy fan de las canciones de Lasso, aunque eso no significa que me gustan varios de sus sencillos.
Entre los sencillos que conozco y recuerdo de Lasso, están los tres que decidí escoger para presentarlos en este post. Lasso es reconocido por su música, la cual mezcla el Rock con el Pop Latino y la Balada Romántica. Su forma tan única de componer y cantar canciones con letras tan emotivas y románticas lo han convertido en un artista bastante famoso en este lado Hispano del mundo. Pero la razón por las que escogí las siguientes tres canciones de todo su repertorio es por algo mucho más personal.
Diferente - Lasso
Let’s start with one of our Venezuelan singer’s most upbeat and cheerful songs, titled “Diferente”. As the second promotional single from his second studio album, “Diferente” is a song by Lasso that—ironically—stands out from his previous hits due to its rhythm and melody, which lean more toward Pop than Ballad or Rock. Ten years after its release, “Diferente” is the song that marked one of Lasso’s many musical “evolutions”. The lyrics speak to a person’s authenticity and how to stand out from the crowd.
The singer sings about a person who is “special” because they manage to stand out from others, including those of their “own generation, and that is a blessing”. He also uses phrases like “you’re so special, I’m going to shout it out” and “everything, everything you do never ceases to impress”. The chorus also speaks of a “price you have to pay for being different”, which is social criticism—something very common in real life and even more so today. The upbeat rhythm and the mix of synthetic sounds with high-pitched backing vocals make this song an anthem to the beauty of being different.
Now, my experience with this song is somewhat similar to what Lasso describes—he was obviously referring to a girl who caught his attention because she was different from everyone else. In my case, it was similar to meeting that person who, interestingly enough, instilled in me this love I have for Lasso’s songs. Yes, it’s thanks to her that I discovered this great Venezuelan singer. But anyway, I suppose I’ve talked more than enough about this ex and what my life was like back then, a decade ago.
Empecemos con una de las canciones más movidas y alegres de nuestro cantante venezolano llamada “Diferente”. Siendo el segundo sencillo promocional de su segundo álbum de estudio, Diferente es una canción de Lasso que -irónicamente- se diferencia de sus anteriores éxitos por su ritmo y melodía más Pop que Balada o Rock. Con ya diez años desde su lanzamiento, Diferente es la canción que trajo en Lasso una de sus varias “evoluciones” musicales. La letra habla de la autenticidad de una persona y de cómo llegar a diferenciarse de los demás.
El cantante habla de una persona que es “especial” debido a que llega a diferenciarse de los demás, incluso de los de su “propia generación y eso es una bendición”. También menciona frases como “eres tan especial, te lo voy a gritar” y “todo, todo lo que haces nunca deja de impresionar”. El coro también habla de un “precio que hay que pagar por ser diferente”, el cual es la crítica social, algo que es muy común verlo en la vida real y aún más en la actualidad. El ritmo alegre, la mezcla de sonidos sintéticos con coros agudos hacen de esta canción un himno a lo bueno de ser diferente.
Ahora, mi experiencia con ésta canción es algo un poco similar a lo que habla Lasso que, obviamente, se refería a una chica que llamó su atención por ser diferente a los demás. En mi caso fue similar al conocer a esa persona que, curiosamente, me inculcó este gusto que le tengo a las canciones de Lasso. Si, es gracias a ella que conocí a este grandioso cantante venezolano. Pero bueno, supongo que hablé más que suficiente sobre esta ex y cómo fue mi vida en aquel entonces, hace una década atrás.
No Pares de Bailar - Lasso
Let’s move on to another song, another pretty famous single by Lasso—one of the first I ever heard and one that, personally, really captivated me. Interestingly, it’s the first single our Venezuelan singer-songwriter released when he launched his solo career in the early 2010s. We can hear a rhythm and melody that are much more Rock and Roll than what we heard in the previous song. It also has a somewhat more melancholic and melancholic melody. The lyrics speak—once again—of authenticity, but this time transformed into “art”.
In “No Pares de Bailar”, we hear a declaration of love described through lyrics that speak of a girl who manages to “stand out from the crowd”, a girl who “dances and stops time, and everyone is watching you”. Lasso also mentions that this girl is so unique that “you define art without even breaking a sweat”. One of the lines I really like, which is part of the chorus, is “I’m sorry, I don’t know how to write; I wish I could describe in a few words what you mean to me”. The phrase “don’t stop dancing” conveys the singer’s message to her to never stop being herself.
Once again, we’re back to the same thing: a song that captures quite well what I experienced a decade ago with that person who was special to me. The nostalgia and melancholy I feel every time I listen to “No Pares de Bailar” is quite strong—stronger, curiously enough, than what I experienced back then when I listened to it over and over with her. I won’t deny that it was also a way of expressing how I felt about that person, especially with the final line that says: “in short, you’re everything to me”. That’s why, at the beginning, I said it was more of a declaration than anything else.
Vamos con otra canción, otro sencillo bastante famoso de Lasso que fue de los primeros que llegué a escuchar y que, personalmente, me fascinó bastante. Curiosamente es el primer sencillo que sacó nuestro cantautor venezolano cuando inició su carrera como solista a principios de los años 2010. Podemos notar un ritmo y una melodía mucho más rocanrolera que la que se puede escuchar en la anterior canción. También posee una melodía un tanto más melancólica y depresiva. La letra habla -una vez más- de la autenticidad, pero esta vez convertida en “arte”.
En “No Pares de Bailar” podemos escuchar una declaración de amor descrita entre letras que hablan de una chica que llega a “destacarse de los demás”, una chica que “bailas y para el tiempo y todos te están viendo”. Lasso también menciona que esta chica es tan original que “defines arte sin siquiera despeinarte”. Una de las frases que me gustan mucho y que es parte de su coro es “lo lamento, no sé escribir, ojalá pudiera describir en pocas palabras lo que eres para mí”. La frase “no pares de bailar” denota una declaración del cantante de no dejar de ser ella misma.
De nuevo, venimos con lo mismo de antes: una canción que define bastante bien lo que experimenté hace una década atrás con esa persona que era especial para mí. La nostalgia y melancolía que siento cada vez que escucho No Pares de Bailar es bastante fuerte, más de lo que curiosamente llegué a experimentar en aquella época que la escuchaba una y otra vez con ella. No voy a negar que incluso era una forma de declarar lo que yo sentía por esa persona, sobre todo con la frase final que dice: “en pocas palabras eres todo para mí”. Es por eso que, al principio, dije que era más una declaración que otra cosa.
Te Veo - Lasso
We wrap up this list with a song that catapulted Lasso to international fame, not only in the music world but also in the world of television. During his brief stint as a soap opera actor, Lasso wrote this second single, titled “Te Veo”, for his first studio album. I haven’t seen the soap opera, nor have I listened much to his early albums. I only remember this song because of the memories it brings back from the past and the countless times I used to listen to it back then.
The song has a somewhat more upbeat rhythm, blending Rock with a touch of Pop in a rather melodic way. “Te Veo” speaks of that phase of post-relationship love and pain; the singer talks about “an illusion”, a “war” he admits to having lost, doubts about what happened, and failed attempts to “forget” that person he was with some time ago. The line “I see you, I get back up, I see you, I breathe again” sounds more like that idealistic feeling of missing a love you no longer have, especially with the following line: “even if I wake up later and stop dreaming”.
Honestly, I didn’t expect a song from over ten years ago—one that holds so many beautiful memories of that time with my ex—to end up describing my current state so perfectly. That’s right, right now I’m just like Lasso, “dreaming” of seeing that special person “once again.” However, unlike our singer from Caracas, I don’t have the chance to see her again, at least not in person. Also, the song is about a love that’s still alive, despite the breakup—something I doubt is entirely similar in my case.
Finalizamos esta lista con una canción que llevó a Lasso a la popularidad internacional, no solo en el mundo de la música, sino también en el mundo de la televisión, inclusive. En su corta época como actor de telenovela, Lasso compuso este segundo sencillo llamado “Te Veo” para su primer álbum de estudio. No he visto la telenovela ni mucho menos he escuchado mucho de sus mencionados primeros álbumes. Solo recuerdo esta canción simplemente por los recuerdos que me trae del pasado y de la enorme cantidad de veces que la escuchaba en aquel entonces.
La canción posee un ritmo un tanto más movido, mezclando Rock con algo de Pop de una forma bastante melódica. Te Veo habla de esa etapa de amor y dolor post-relación, el cantante habla de “una ilusión”, una “guerra” que admite haber perdido, dudas sobre lo que sucedió e intentos fallidos de “olvidar” a esa persona con la cual estuvo hace un tiempo atrás. La frase “te veo, vuelvo a levantarme, te veo, vuelvo a respirar” suena más a esa sensación idealista de extrañar a ese amor que ya uno no tiene, sobre todo con la siguiente frase ”aunque luego me despierte y deje de soñar”.
Sinceramente, no esperaba que una canción de hace más de diez años y con la que tengo tantos recuerdos hermosos de aquella época con mi ex termine definiendo tan bien mi estado actual. Así es, ahora mismo estoy como Lasso “soñando” con ver a esa persona especial, “una vez más”. Sin embargo, a diferencia de nuestro cantante caraqueño, yo no tengo la ventaja de volver a verla, al menos no en persona. También que la canción habla de un amor que sigue vigente, a pesar de la ruptura, cosa que en mi caso dudo que sea del todo similar.
