Plot

The movie begins with a young Peter Parker playing hide-and-seek at home with his parents. As he checks every room in the house, he finds his father’s study in complete disarray, as if someone had been there. Concerned, Peter’s parents rush to grab some documents they had stored there and decide to leave, but not before entrusting their only son to the care of his aunt and uncle, May and Ben Parker. Since then, Peter hasn’t seen his parents again. Our protagonist grows up and becomes a teenager obsessed with skateboarding and photography, while also enduring bullying at school.

If Tobey Maguire was the Spider-Man of my childhood, Andrew Garfield was undoubtedly the Spider-Man of my teenage years. However, the difference between the two is the number of times I’ve watched their movies on TV. Sam Raimi’s Trilogy is something very difficult for any other reboot or series to surpass, as it’s part of a very cherished time in my life. The level of nostalgia I feel for these movies is immense, which is why it’s hard for any other Spider-Man movie to replace them. On the other hand, this doesn’t mean that The Amazing Spider-Man is a bad movie.

The fact that I haven’t watched this movie as many times doesn’t mean I didn’t like it enough to dedicate a review to it in this Spider-Man Special. While it received mixed reviews and opinions at first, over the years and with the changes that occurred, it became a cult classic, especially for fans of the comic book spider hero himself. Although, at its core, it essentially retells the same origin story of the famous Spider-Man, Marc Webb’s film managed to distinguish itself quite well from Sam Raimi’s already acclaimed film about the same character.

Si Tobey Maguire fue el Spider-Man de mi infancia, Andrew Garfield fue el Spider-Man de mi adolescencia sin duda alguna. Sin embargo, la diferencia que hay entre uno y el otro es la cantidad de veces que he visto sus películas en la televisión. La trilogía de Sam Raimi es algo muy difícil de superar por cualquier otro reinicio o saga ya que es parte de una época muy valiosa de mi vida. El nivel de nostalgia que le tengo a estas películas es enorme, por lo cual es complicado que otra película de Spider-Man logre reemplazarlas. Por otro lado, esto no quiere decir que The Amazing Spider-Man sea una mala película.

El hecho de que no haya visto tantas veces ésta película no significa que no me haya gustado tanto como para dedicarle un reseña en este Especial de Spider-Man. Si bien tuvo sus críticas y opiniones divididas al principio, con el paso de los años y los cambios que ocurrieron la convirtieron en una obra de culto, más que nada para aquellos fans del héroe arácnido de los cómics como tal. A pesar de que, en esencia, nos cuenta de nuevo la misma historia de origen del famoso Hombre Araña, la cinta de Marc Webb logró distinguirse muy bien de la ya reconocida cinta de Sam Raimi del mismo personaje.

From the very first minute of the film, we can see a clear difference from the story of Peter Parker we saw in Spider-Man (2002). This begins with the appearance of Peter’s parents, particularly his father, Richard Parker, who plays a larger role in the story because he is introduced as a scientist who worked for Norman Osborn’s company, Oscorp Industries. While his sudden disappearance becomes a mystery at first, the film develops a somewhat conspiracy-theory-driven plot regarding the invention Richard was working on and the origin of the great Spider-Man.

It was his desire to learn more about his father that led him to go to the Oscorp Tower and infiltrate it as a supposed intern in order to meet Dr. Curtis Connors, who was the lab partner of his father, Richard Parker. However, while inspecting restricted areas of the lab without permission, Peter makes a small mistake and gets swarmed by a bunch of spiders. One of them crawls down the back of his neck and bites him.

En resumen y para no darles spoilers a los que aún no han visto esta película, el deseo de Peter Parker por conocer más sobre el pasado de su padre lo lleva a relacionarse con el Dr. Connors y así ayudarlo con su investigación de cruce de especies. Al faltarle un brazo, el Dr. Connors ha dedicado su vida en esta investigación, pero siempre ha tenido problemas para terminar de resolver el problema que tienen al mezclar dos especies distintas. Ahora, con la ayuda de Peter consigue resolver dicho problema, pero esto causó que tuviera luego problemas con sus tíos por no llegar a tiempo a casa y cumplir con su palabra.

After an argument, a chase, and an unfortunate confrontation, our protagonist pays the price for his selfish and irresponsible teenage behavior. Let me say right off the bat that I have nothing against this Spider-Man played by Andrew Garfield; rather, I feel he is a more human and realistic version of the iconic character because of everything he goes through. Let’s say that, unlike Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Andrew’s has more “canonical events” that make him rethink his role as a hero, partner, son, nephew, etc. We also see that he is held more responsible for all the catastrophic events we see in the movie, since he is the one who, indirectly, creates the main villain, the Lizard. By the way, that villain doesn’t really stand out much, to be honest.

Si bien esto cambia a la mitad de la película, no quita que dicha diferencia sea recalcable.

Desde ya les digo que no tengo nada en contra de este Spider-Man de Andrew Garfield, más bien siento que es una versión más humana y real del icónico personaje debido a todo lo que vive. Digamos que, a diferencia del Spider-Man de Tobey Maguire, el de Andrew tiene más “eventos canónicos” que lo hacen replantearse su labor como héroe, pareja, hijo, sobrino, etc. También vemos que se le atribuye más la responsabilidad de todos los sucesos catastróficos que vemos en la película al ser él mismo quien, indirectamente, crea al villano principal, Lagarto. Por cierto, dicho villano no destaca mucho que digamos, la verdad.

From the moment they meet to the moment they start dating, there’s more progression and development than in Raimi’s first two Spider-Man movies. Of course, we’re talking about the romantic aspect and all that. You can also see a much more natural chemistry and dynamic between Peter and Gwen, honestly. But I want to highlight the progress their relationship made over the course of the two-hour movie. We see that Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker isn’t a total wallflower and takes the initiative, and Gwen Stacy herself does the same and decides to take the next step in their relationship.

Another thing I really like about Gwen and Peter's relationship is how they manage to work together to defeat the villain and save the city. Podemos ver que en cierta parte de la película a nuestro protagonista le cuesta balancearse para llegar a la Torre Oscorp. Es por eso que vemos cómo utiliza las grúas para construcción que hay en cada edificio como apoyo para así lanzar su telaraña y balancearse más rápido. Otra cosa interesante del Spider-Man de Andrew Garfield es la forma en la que se mueve como si fuera más una araña. También es que es mucho más cómico y parlanchín, lo cual le da un toque de fidelidad.

Otra cosa que me gusta mucho es el diseño del traje de Spider-Man, el cual es más translúcido y realista. Lo mismo va para con el diseño de Lagarto que, obviamente, es 100% CGI, lo cual impresiona debido al nivel de detalles que tiene. El uso de efectos visuales prácticos y hechos por computadora es excelente también, sobre todo en escenas de acción, batallas y caos donde más se destacan por sobre todo. Los efectos de sonido son de lo mejor y me gusta más que la banda sonora, inclusive. Esto debido a que, ya sea por nostalgia o cualquier otra cosa, no la escucho mejor que la icónica banda sonora de Danny Elfman. En fin, aquí les dejo el primer reboot de Spider-Man en cines.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de superhéroes.
