SANDA | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I wanted to start talking to you about the anime I watched last fall with a work that is very appropriate for this time of year, especially for Christmas. Watching an anime like SANDA is not very common in this industry, especially now that most anime are more generic than Hollywood action movies. That's why the anime I'm bringing you today stands out from most others because it has a rather peculiar mix of this famous celebration with elements of action, comedy, drama, and even gore.

Yes, the anime is about Santa Claus and Christmas and all that, but with a more dystopian, chaotic, violent, bloody, raw, and uncensored setting. The most ironic thing about all this is that the main focus of the whole story is the young people or teenagers of this world. But before I tell you about the plot, I want to warn those of you who have decided to read this not to expect a normal anime with predictable plot sequences or twists or characters typical of any other anime of this style. This anime deals with several heavy themes at once as we delve deeper into the story.

Quise empezar a hablarles de los animes que he visto en la pasada temporada de otoño con una obra muy adecuada para aquellas épocas, sobre todo para navidad. Ver un anime del estilo de SANDA no es muy común en esta industria y mucho menos ahora que la mayoría de animes son más genéricos que las películas de acción de Hollywood. Es por eso que el anime que les traigo hoy destaca por sobre la mayoría debido a que tiene una mezcla bastante peculiar de esta famosa celebración con elementos de acción, comedia, drama y hasta gore inclusive.

Si, el anime habla de Santa Claus y la navidad y todo eso, pero con una ambientación más distópica, caótica, violenta, sangrienta, cruda y sin censura. Lo más irónico de todo esto es que el centro principal de toda esta historia son los jóvenes o adolescentes de este mundo. Pero antes de hablarles sobre su trama les quiero advertir desde ya a los que decidieron leerme que no esperen un anime normal con una secuencia o giros de trama predecibles o personajes típicos de cualquier otro anime del estilo. Este anime habla de varios temas densos a la vez mientras más nos adentramos en su historia.

As you read above, the anime is set in a near-future Japan where the birth rate is so low that they decided to prioritize young people and impose mandatory rules and regulations on their society. Several of these rules include children having to use separate bathrooms from adults, young people being paired up for marriage, and no one being allowed to sleep at night (supposedly to prevent growth). It is in this dystopian world that a young man named Sanda discovers that he can become Santa Claus thanks to the horrible scare he gets from his classmate, Shiori, who later asks him for help.

What Shiori wants is to find her missing best friend, Ono Ichie, who is one of the very few young people in this future who knows what Christmas is and has always wanted to celebrate it with her friends. However, the search for Ono and the attempts to remind this society what Christmas is all about will be a complete challenge for our young protagonist. Up to this point, it sounds like an action thriller with a touch of Christmas fantasy, with Sanda being able to turn into Santa Claus. But we can also notice a dark touch between the story and its characters, starting with Shiori's sadistic nature.

Como ya leyeron arriba, el anime está ambientado en un Japón de un futuro próximo donde su tasa de natalidad es tan baja que decidieron darle prioridad a los jóvenes e impartir reglas y normas obligatorias en su sociedad. Varias de estas reglas son como que los niños tienen que usar el baño aparte de los adultos, a los jóvenes se les arreglan parejas para casarse y ninguno puede dormir en las noches (supuestamente para evitar el crecimiento). Es en este mundo distópico cuando un joven llamado Sanda descubre que puede convertirse en Santa Claus gracias al horrible susto que le da su compañera de clase, Shiori, quien posteriormente le pide ayuda.

Lo que Shiori desea es poder encontrar a su mejor amiga que se encuentra desaparecida, Ono Ichie, quien es de los poquísimos jóvenes de este futuro que conocen lo que es la Navidad y siempre deseó celebrarla con sus amigos. Sin embargo, la búsqueda de Ono y los intentos de hacerle recordar a esta sociedad qué es la Navidad será un completo desafío para nuestro joven protagonista. Hasta este punto suena como todo un thriller de acción con ese toque de fantasía navideña con eso de que Sanda se puede convertir en Santa Claus. Pero también podemos notar un toque oscuro entre su historia y sus personajes, empezando por la naturaleza sádica de Shiori.

It's difficult to find a character here who could be described as "normal", since most of them have certain mental problems, not to mention that they live in a dystopian world where young people have a much higher social status than adults. As a result, these young people are more liberal and conceited, not to mention dangerous, since they can kill adults without going to jail or receiving any punishment. That's right, in this world, young people are the main enemies of Christmas returning to being a celebration as it was in the past.

The anime also deals with themes such as friendship, relationships, and companionship, all of which are distorted by a dark plot with unexpected twists that draw you deeper and deeper into the story. Its unique blend of action, gore, and comedy is its main distinguishing feature, as it strikes an excellent balance between these genres with shocking, funny, and even disturbing moments. The latter can be attributed mainly to one character in this anime who, from the moment he appears, causes an unparalleled sense of unease. I'm talking about the lunatic and evil principal of this high school, Hifumi Oshiburu.

Aquí es difícil encontrar a un personaje que digamos sea “normal”, ya que la mayoría tiene ciertos problemas mentales, sin mencionar que viven en un mundo distópico donde los jóvenes poseen un estatus social mucho más elevado que los adultos. Esto, por consecuencia, hace que estos jóvenes sean más liberales y engreídos, sin decir que hasta son peligrosos ya que pueden matar a gente adulta sin tener que ir a la cárcel o recibir ningún castigo. Así es, en este mundo los jóvenes son los principales enemigos de que la Navidad vuelva a ser una celebración como lo era en su pasado.

El anime también trata temas como las amistades, las relaciones y el compañerismo; todo esto tergiversado con una trama oscura con giros inesperados que te enganchan más y más a su historia. Su mezcla particular de acción, gore y comedia es su principal distintivo ya que consigue un excelente equilibrio entre estos géneros con momentos impactantes, divertidos y hasta perturbadores, incluso. Esto último se lo podemos atribuir mayormente a uno que otro personaje de este anime que, desde su aparición, causa una sensación inquietante sin igual. Estoy hablando del lunático y malvado director de esta escuela secundaria, Hifumi Oshiburu.

This tyrannical antagonist in SANDA is, for me, the visual representation of all the trauma and dark thoughts that this adult society has in this dystopian world. Just imagine a person who hates the mere idea of aging and dying and risks undergoing countless cosmetic and physical procedures to maintain a youthful appearance. Just looking at his face makes us feel uncomfortable, but knowing everything he's been through, it's incredible to even think that he's still human. And when I say that Hifumi is a visual representation of the thoughts and traumas of adults, it's because that society thinks the same way he does.

Apart from giving them a status and a list of meaningless rules, the young people of this dystopian world have—thanks to their parents—a very high responsibility to maintain and engender future generations. However, there is something darker behind all this, and that is the secret of growing up. Another theme that is repeatedly mentioned throughout this series is the desire to grow up and become an adult. It is normal for all this to fall on young people, as they are going through the stage of transitioning from children to adults. But I see no sense at all in this adult society preventing such development at any cost.

Este tiránico y antagonista principal de SANDA es -para mí- la representación visual de todo el trauma y pensamientos oscuros que tiene esta sociedad adulta en este mundo distópico. Solo imagínate a una persona que detesta la mera idea de envejecer y morir y se arriesga a enfrentarse a un sinnúmero de operaciones estéticas y físicas para mantener un aspecto joven. Con solo ver su rostro ya nos causa cierta incomodidad, pero al saber todo lo que pasó es increíble pensar siquiera que siga siendo un humano. Y cuando digo que Hifumi es una representación visual de los pensamientos y traumas de los adultos, es porque dicha sociedad piensa igual que él.

Aparte de darle un estatus y una lista de reglas sin sentido, los jóvenes de este mundo distópico tienen -gracias a sus padres- una responsabilidad altísima de mantener y engendrar a las futuras generaciones. Sin embargo, algo más oscuro hay detrás de todo esto y es el secreto que hay en crecer. Un tema que también se menciona reiteradamente a lo largo de esta serie es ese deseo de crecer y volverse un adulto. Que todo esto recaiga en los jóvenes es algo normal al estar viviendo dicha etapa en la que pasan de ser niños a adultos. Pero que esta sociedad adulta impida a cualquier coste dicho desarrollo es algo que no le veo sentido en lo absoluto.

On the other hand, I can understand all these drastic and desperate measures that adults use in this dystopian world to prevent young people from ever growing up. Thinking about being an adult at such a young age always seems like a dream or a fantasy to many... until it happens, and in many cases, the reality of adult life becomes a real nightmare. This, coupled with the fear of being close to extinction, is something that this dystopian society constantly experiences. That is why they let people like Hifumi lead schools like the Daikoku Welfare Academy.

That is why the mere existence of Sanda and his ability to become Santa Claus is a danger to this extremist society. It is crazy to think of a world where Christmas is not only celebrated but even talked about as if it were an urban legend. And it's curious how they paint this world as a dark and gloomy place because of this. But the most striking thing of all is Santa's appearance, as he is a muscular man with white hair and beard and superhuman strength. He is practically immortal and only appears when the protagonist dresses in red.

Por otro lado, puedo entender todas estas medidas drásticas y desesperadas que utilizan los adultos en este mundo distópico para que los jóvenes nunca lleguen a crecer. El pensar en ser adulto a tan corta edad siempre parece sonar como un sueño o una fantasía para muchos… hasta que esto llega a suceder y, en muchos casos, la realidad de la vida adulta se convierte en una auténtica pesadilla. Esto, sumado al temor de estar próximos a la extinción es algo que vive constantemente esta sociedad distópica. Por eso mismo es que dejan que gente como Hifumi lidere escuelas como la Academia de Bienestar Daikoku.

Es por eso que, la mera existencia de Sanda y de su capacidad de convertirse en Santa Claus es un peligro para esta sociedad extremista. Es una locura pensar en un mundo en el que la Navidad no solo se celebre, sino que incluso se hable de ello como si fuera una leyenda urbana. Y es curioso cómo nos pintan este mundo como un lugar oscuro y lúgubre debido a esto. Pero lo más llamativo de todo es el aspecto de Santa, siendo este un hombre musculoso con el cabello y la barba blanca y con una fuerza sobrehumana. Es prácticamente inmortal y solo aparece cuando el protagonista se viste de rojo.

Apart from everything I've just told you, the anime is mainly about the daily life of our young protagonist, Sanda, who wants to live his school life as normally and peacefully as possible. Obviously, this won't happen after he finds out he can transform into Santa Claus. But apart from the action, mystery, and drama involved in all this, the anime has some very funny moments and experiences common to any high school student. The direction of this series helps a lot to balance all this, not to mention the inclusion and participation of some secondary characters.

To be completely honest, I really enjoyed watching this anime air last fall because of the crazy plot it shows us at the beginning. I won't deny that it does have some common tropes of a Shōnen action anime, such as the protagonist being the "hero of the story", the enemies with their twisted plans, and those long-awaited moments in each confrontation or battle. But apart from this, SANDA manages to be very different from other anime in this genre by showing us the life story of ordinary high school students living in this dystopian world.

Aparte de todo esto que les acabo de contar, el anime trata mayormente sobre la vida diaria de nuestro joven protagonista, Sanda, quien piensa vivir su vida escolar de lo más normal y tranquila posible. Obviamente esto no sucederá así luego de saber que puede transformarse en Santa Claus. Pero aparte de la acción, el misterio y el drama que hay en todo esto; el anime posee momentos muy divertidos y experiencias comunes de cualquier estudiante de secundaria. La dirección que tiene esta serie ayuda mucho a equilibrar todo esto, sin mencionar la inclusión y participación de algunos personajes secundarios.

Siéndoles completamente sincero, me gustó mucho ver este anime en emisión en la pasada temporada de otoño debido a toda esta trama loca que nos muestra al principio. No voy a negar que sí tiene algunos tropos comunes de un anime Shōnen de acción como lo es el protagonista siendo el “héroe de la historia”, los enemigos con sus planes retorcidos y esos momentos tan esperados en cada enfrentamiento o batallas que tiene. Pero aparte de esto, SANDA logra ser muy diferente a otros animes de este género al mostrarnos la historia de la vida de unos simples jóvenes de secundaria viviendo en este mundo distópico.

We see awkward moments between classmates, typical scenes between boys and girls, teenage love problems, and the typical existential problems that all young people go through at that stage of their lives. This is especially true for Sanda, our protagonist, who, after learning that he can transform into Santa Claus, completely changes the way he thinks and sees his classmates, as he now has the mind of both a young person and an adult at the same time. Although there are a few similar moments, the anime has almost no fanservice, which is a positive thing.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of SANDA. Produced by Science Saru (the same studio that animated the famous and beloved anime Dandadan), it is to be expected that it has a style and level of quality well above average. The first thing that stands out is its art and drawing style, which is unique with its thick lines and well-executed visual details. The character designs are also excellent and eye-catching, especially Santa Claus. The cool and dark color palette also helps give the work its unique style.

The animation, its fluidity, and details also stand out, especially in action scenes where you can enjoy an excellent audiovisual spectacle. The visual effects are also excellent, although they are not as striking and colorful as other popular anime in the genre. And let's not forget the graphic scenes, adding a small level of censorship in a couple of moments, but without removing essential details such as blood, cuts, broken bones, etc. The sound effects are another notable detail throughout the anime, but nothing like the soundtrack that manages to elevate everything to its peak. In short, a Christmas anime that you have to see.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the action, drama, and comedy genres.

Podemos ver momentos incómodos entre compañeros de clase, escenas típicas entre un chico y una chica, problemas amorosos entre adolescentes y los típicos problemas existenciales que pasa todo joven en aquella época de sus vidas. Sobre todo Sanda, nuestro protagonista quien luego de saber que puede transformarse en Santa Claus, su forma de pensar y ver a sus compañeros cambia por completo al tener la mente tanto de un joven como de una persona adulta al mismo tiempo. Aunque sí tiene uno que otro momento parecido, el anime no posee casi nada de fanservice, lo cual es algo positivo.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del aspecto audiovisual que tiene SANDA. A cargo de Science Saru (el mismo estudio que animó el famoso y favorito anime Dandadan), es de esperarse que tenga un estilo y nivel de calidad muy por encima de la media. Lo que primero se puede llegar a destacar es su estilo de arte y dibujo, lo cual es único con esos trazos gruesos y detalles visuales bien logrados. El diseño de los personajes también son excelentes y bien llamativos, sobre todo el de Santa Claus. La paleta de colores fríos y oscuros ayudan también a darle ese estilo único a la obra.

Tanto la animación como su fluidez y detalles también se destacan bastante, más que nada en escenas de acción donde se puede disfrutar bastante de un excelente espectáculo audiovisual. Los efectos visuales también son excelentes, aunque no son tan llamativos y coloridos como otros animes populares del género. Y no nos olvidemos de las escenas gráficas, añadiendo un pequeño nivel de censura en un par de momentos, pero sin quitar detalle esenciales como la sangre, las cortadas, los huesos rotos, etc. Los efectos de sonido son otro detalle notable a lo largo del anime, pero nada como la banda sonora que consigue elevarlo todo a su punto máximo. En fin, un anime navideño que tienen que ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la acción, el drama y la comedia.
