This night, the Japanese Garden in Hasselt became a sea of lights, warmth and remembrance during Obon Matsuri, the traditional Japanese festival honoring loved ones who have passed.

Lanterns floated gracefully across the water, carrying our heartfelt wishes and messages into the night. The soft glow reflected on the ponds, the gentle murmur of the waterfall, and the crackling fire created such a magical and sacred atmosphere.

In Japanese tradition, Obon is a time when the spirits of ancestors return to visit, and families gather to celebrate their memory with dance, light and offerings. Here in Hasselt, it felt like a beautiful bridge between cultures, a moment of peace, connection and gratitude under the summer night sky.
