This is my post for #freewriters 2858 prompt no sense hosted by @mariannewest
My husband came home yesterday from his camping trip to Homosassa River State Park. He said he got lost going there and coming home. When we are away from home we do not have internet on our phone and neither of our trucks has a GPS. I had an old Garmin GPS that someone had given us, but we never knew how to use it.
He had written the driving instruction on a piece of paper, but was concerned about trying to read it while driving. He is not a multi-tasker. I dug out the old Garmin to see if I could figure it out. The first thing it did was want me to purchase updates for it, this made no sense to me because the roads are the same.
When he was near the park the GPS said turn left, but he thought at that point he wrote down turn right. After a few miles, he turned around and turned where he thought he was to turn and found the campground. On the way home, it would not take our address so he typed in directions to the town and State Road 60, once on 60 it is a straight drive across state. It took him in a circle back to where he started. I think he did something wrong when setting it up.
It was a good thing he did not stay longer. His second day he was standing on the bank looking at the river and for some reason felt dizzy and fell down the bank. Half of his body from head down went into the river, and his elbow came down on a tree root. It knocked a huge hole in it and left a piece of skin flapping that he had to cut off. Three hours later it was still bleeding so he had to find a store to buy bandages.
The next day he was walking behind his truck and hit the bicycle rack with his shin and took a big chunk of meat out on it and a big bruise next to the cut. He had to cut the flapping skin from it, too.
There is a bridge to cross the river, but it has no pilings, it is held up by cables. He walked across it, but when he go to the other side, all of the boards were gone, so he could not go any further.
He did not take the kayak and thought he would rent one there, they wanted 30 dollars for two hours so he did not do it. There were many trails, but you could not take a bike on any of them, they said walking only.
I am not sure where on the river but he said there were concrete bleachers built into the bank of the river, he said they had at least 20 steps to it. We wonder what kind of activity went on where they needed bleachers on the river. I wish he would have taken a photo of it.
The squirrels were very friendly, coming right up to him while he was eating. Once he left a bag on the table and when he came back, his onions were out of the bag and he knew they were in it when he left. He also had a mango which was still in the bag but a hole was eaten in it, he cut away the part the squirrel ate and put it in his cooler for later.
The last time he camped, he had a floor style A/C unit and it sucked his tent in so this time he bought a window unit and covered his tent with a tarp. He said it was cold inside. I would not have liked it.
In the above photo his truck is parked where they want you to set up camp, but the ground was covered in shell which would have poked holes in his tent, so he set it up off to the side. I told him if I was there, I would have spent everyday in all of the vacant sites looking for shells and fossils.
