I was 28 years old when I started dating my husband, and I was 30 years old when I married him. I swore I would never get married again after 2 failed marriages.

I was fishing with him, and the second year we were together, he had an accountant to do his taxes. The accountant told us he wanted us to get married before the year ended. The reason was that I had four children, and he needed the tax deductions. We waited until December and got married, that was 38 years ago. I never got a proposal. We did what the accountant said to do.

Marriage is hard work, don't let anyone tell you it isn't. There have been times when I wanted to throw in the towel, but I never did. We have had our ups and downs, but even with the lowest of downs, I have never said or had the thought he’ll have to beg before I forgave him. I have been so mad that we have gone days without speaking. Then something changes, and the issue gets swept under the rug. But having him beg, no way, that is not me. Making someone beg for forgiveness is belittling to them and you.

As mad as I have been toward him, the one thing that I can say is I have never stopped loving him, and I have been very mad. I think with all we have been through, my love is stronger today than it was the day we married.

We might not always see eye to eye, but the one thing that has never changed is that we make a good team. No matter if it is fishing together or in separate boats, if we are building a boat, remodeling our house after a hurricane took the roof off, getting sandfleas and packaging them, or rewiring a boat trailer, if work is to be done, we have always worked good together.
