Electricity: Lack and possible (unwanted) solutions.

I do not know how I could possibly send a message of this magnitude without sounding pained and very loud. In case you are wondering, this is the female half of MMO, @deraaa, and one thing that is very vivid about me is how much I can not keep my voice away from anything I write. Anyway, I will try my best to tone it a little.

First, one problem that we are facing is the constant increase of basic utilities like data and electricity bills. The most alarming is data and that is because the government keeps increasing their tax to these private companies. Well, that is just one point to where I am headed because what the actual F do they do with all that money? We lack the basic light and water and yet they keep taxing businesses. Take that to the light area. Electricity in Kaduna is distributed by a private company. I can’t count how often they have gone on strikes for one reason or the other. Their reasons and demands always make me feel conflicted because on one hand, I understand salary stuff but on the other, I call bullshit! We should not be a country at 65, still not able to hold basic things like light. I mean take a look at Japan!

Okay. I’m calmer now. What are the challenges we face with electricity? The challenge is we get no light and pay for it still. I won’t forget how many of us were deprived of electricity last year and still got increased rates because we –the citizens– needed to pay up a debt of almost a billion in electricity. They needed to meet their quotas as an electric company and we were paying for it. I had never been as incensed as I was when I heard such flimsy rationale. It was such a silly excuse because Nigeria is not poor.

Anyway, I feel the only solution would be solar energy. But how many Nigerians can afford that? From what I heard, a well known businessman had wanted to provide this solution for Nigeria. He had seen the future with solar energy but the government turned it down. Why? Solar takes the citizens out from under their thumb. Many of the fueling stations are owned by personalities in the government. They need the people to spend money. They want businesses dependent on them. Then we have water solutions brought about by a young entrepreneur and inventor. This time using water to generate electricity. Again, the Nigerian government became an obstacle. Guess what? The young man was taken by the Chinese investors and placed on a contract. I honestly have no words, watching potentials getting wasted due to incompetent grandpas. Like I said, I would be very angry writing this especially now. As a country this old, we should not be struggling with light. This should have become a basic amenity, something we get daily. Unfortunately, Nigeria can never move forward. Not with the half-dead walking in governmental positions.

It really saddens me Deraa that Nigeria has gone backwards in some areas since I was there.
For a country abundant with natural resources, the magnitude of corruption at all levels is mindboggling. Nobody learnt the lessons. People are still doing it, perhaps even worse now, and then student would be law makers are the same corrupt wavelength too!

I despair and feel for you.

In this moment, with tension everywhere, I can't even be bothered with this country and the very nonchalant people anymore. Until Nigeria run to the ground, they won't rest. I really hope I won't be here to see that day.

Seems nonchalant is the new buzz word over there.
