How Nidhoggr and Death Splinter Changed My Gameplay

Almost every player has a moment in their early days of playing Splinterlands when they play without realising it. I was no exception. Before, whenever a "high mana" battle would come up, I would panic. Without thinking twice, I would put the most expensive or powerful cards in my collection on the board. Sometimes I would win, sometimes I would lose—but I didn't really understand why I was losing or winning.

However, my playing life turned around when I decided to invest in a powerful summoner and learn how to use it properly. That game-changing summoner is Nidhoggr, which is currently one of the best assets in my deck.

In today's Splinterlands community engagement challenge, I will share with you my experience of a particular battle. This match taught me how to build an unbeatable team with the right combination of speed, execution, and healing.

High mana and a tough test

It was a ranked match in the Modern format. As soon as the battle screen came up, I saw the mana cap: 61 Mana.

Previously, I might have just randomly placed some cards. But this time I had a plan. The ruleset was Standard, meaning there were no additional changes to the rules of the game. And this is where the true strength of a player's deck is tested.

Unleashing the power of the dragon

I chose without hesitation: Nidhoggr.

This is currently the most expensive and valuable summoner in my collection. I didn't buy it just to decorate, but to dominate in tough battles.

Using Nidhoggr, you can choose different statuses. For this battle, I selected:
"Give +2 Speed and Execute to 3 Units."

Why did I choose this?

  1. Speed is King: In high mana battles, everyone brings big monsters. If my cards can attack first, I will have a huge advantage.
  2. "Execute" Ability: This can turn the game around. The rule is—"If an enemy has 2 or less health after an attack, they will be immediately attacked again." This is the best way to quickly finish off the enemy's powerful 'tank' cards.

Why death splinter?

The advantage of Nidhogg is that it can be used with any other element card with the dragon card. I chose Death Splinter. My reasoning was very clear. High mana battles tend to last longer. So I needed sustainability to win. The "corrupted healing" ability of the death unit filled that need for me. It kept my main tank alive, and the attackers could continue their work.

Defence and attack walls

The way I set up my positions is described below:

  1. Dar 'Gottem' Gearnut

I placed this Gnome card right up front. It has a lot of health and the Trample ability. If it kills an enemy, it immediately attacks the next enemy. Nidhoggr's speed buff made him a formidable fighter.

Night Reaper

I put Night Reaper in the second position. Because of its Flying ability, it can easily avoid enemy attacks, and because of its Wingbreak, it selectively attacks enemy flying cards.

  1. Helheim Demon

This was the trump card of my strategy. Helheim Demon has the Taunt ability. This means that enemies will attack it instead of being forced to attack my main tank or other weak cards. It absorbs all the damage alone.

  1. Arachne Weaver

This is the card I took Death Splinter for. Arachne Weaver has Corrupted Healing. Every round, he restores or heals my cards. On the one hand, Helheim Demon is getting hit; on the other hand, this card is healing him—this combination frustrates the enemy.

  1. Gravebrand Warlock

It was important for me to have more speed than my opponent. Gravebrand Warlock gives the entire team Swiftness (+1 Speed). Combined with Nidhoggr's +2 Speed, my team was attacking at lightning speed!

  1. Ironwing Juggernaut

In the last position, I put Ironwing Juggernaut. Because of its Charge ability, it can attack from any position. It served as my backline defence.

Battle: Field Battle

My opponent, Marciospy, brought a Water deck and Kelya Frendul Summoner. His team was strong, but my strategy started to work from the first round.

Battle link

Rounds 1 and 2:

The difference in speed was obvious from the start. My units were attacking first. My Helheim Demon was doing its job well—drawing all the enemy's attacks towards itself. On the other hand, Arachne Weaver was healing him and keeping him alive.

Turning Point:

Nidhoggr's Execute ability worked like magic here. Whenever an enemy unit was getting low on health, my cards would trigger Execute or Trample, quickly taking them out of the game. It wouldn't have been possible to kill them so quickly with a normal lineup.

When the dust settled, I saw my tank still standing, and the entire enemy team was gone! It wasn't just a win; it was a tactical win.

The importance of holding Nidhoggr

One of the key things I learned from participating in this challenge is that buying and holding expensive cards like Nidhoggr isn't just for the fun of it; it's a testament to my trust in the Splinterlands ecosystem. I don't just withdraw rewards from the game, I reinvest them to increase my HP and strengthen my deck. This "investor mindset" is what makes the difference between a casual player and a serious gamer.

What this moment taught me

This particular match taught me that mana isn't about power; real power is efficiency.

  1. Speed is everything: Winning is easier when you can attack before your enemy.

  2. Synergy: The combination of Taunt Monsters with Healers is very difficult to break.

  3. Proper use of Summoner: Using Nidhoggr's special abilities in accordance with the situation was the key to victory.

I hope my analysis will help new players think differently about high-mana battles. Not just big monsters - build a team like a smart one.

See you on the battlefield!
